UCL is a diverse community which values the freedom to challenge convention and to think differently. With over 14,300 staff and 44,000 students from 150 countries, we pursue academic excellence and make a positive impact on real world problems. The Bartlett is UCL’s global faculty of the built environment, home to radical thinking about architecture and design since 1841. Our work is all about human spaces, understanding and influencing how they are structured in locations worldwide. This includes physical structures like houses, buildings and cities, as well as invisible governing structures like political and legal systems, financial and economic frameworks, value creation and distribution, and social and cultural norms.

We are seeking an exceptional candidate to join us as Director of The Bartlett School of Architecture. The School is one of the 12 Schools, Centres and Institutes within The Bartlett Faculty of the Built Environment, and is ranked 2nd in the world in the QS World University Rankings (2021) by subject, and the top architecture school by the Architects’ Journal AJ100 for the 17th consecutive year. Reporting to the Dean of The Bartlett Faculty, the Director of The Bartlett School of Architecture will provide strategic leadership and management of the School and contribute to the delivery of objectives and initiatives of the Faculty and UCL. Innovation and diversity across our educational and research activities, as well as in our public and industry engagement, remain of central importance to the School’s future trajectory. Accordingly, we are seeking a Director who can offer transformative ideas about the future of architecture and design, and who will bring an openness to engage students, staff, alumni, and other stakeholders in crafting a shared and inclusive vision for the School.

Candidates will offer a track record of experience of strategic leadership and management in large, complex environments, and a relevant portfolio of outstanding and internationally-recognised work in the design, theory or history of architecture or directly related discipline. In addition to wide-ranging interests across the breadth of the history, theory and practice of architecture, you will have a deep knowledge and experience of operating with or within universities. You will further be able to demonstrate commitment to the principles of equality, diversity and inclusion, and specifically as these relate to architectural education and/or practice.

As London’s Global University, we know diversity fosters creativity and innovation. We want our community to represent the diversity of the world’s academic talent, from local to global. We are committed to equality of opportunity, to being fair and inclusive, and to being a place where we all belong.

We therefore particularly encourage applications from candidates currently underrepresented in UCL’s academic, research and teaching workforce. These include people from Black, Asian and ethnic minority backgrounds; disabled people; LGBTQ+ people; and women.
