The Department of History at Vanderbilt University invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professor in environmental history, defined broadly to include, but not limited to, histories of environment or climate; the development of the environmental sciences; race and environmental justice; economic, legal and policy histories of environmental regulation; and indigenous and/or non-western societies’ environmental practices.

The candidate will be expected to contribute actively to the new Climate Studies major, which is part of a group of broad initiatives on climate change across the university. The position will be housed in the Department of History, and half of the teaching will be courses that count toward the Climate Studies major.

Preferred strengths include but are not limited to expertise in regions outside North America or in regional or global processes encompassing North America. We are interested in research that connects environmental history with legal, economic, or race and diaspora studies, or the history of science, medicine, and/or technology. The successful candidate will find a supportive community in the Department of History; in relevant interdisciplinary programs such as Environmental and Sustainability Studies and Medicine, Health, and Society; and in thriving communities in African-American and Diaspora Studies, American Studies, Asian Studies, and Latin American Studies.

Qualifications

The successful candidate will have a PhD in history or a related historical field in hand at the time of appointment, August 15, 2022.
