The School of Nursing at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) invites applications and nominations for the position of Family, Community and Health Systems Department Chair.

 

The Chair, Family, Community and Health Systems, works collaboratively with the Sr. and Associate Deans as a member of the Dean’s leadership team, and is responsible to the Dean. This individual is responsible for the administration and daily functioning of a defined department in the School of Nursing (SON). The Department Chair is charged with major responsibility for leading faculty development in the missions of the SON and UAB including teaching, scholarship, and service. The Department Chair works collaboratively with other Associate Deans and administrators in the creation of individual faculty development plans, the mobilization of valuable resources to support faculty development, and guiding faculty toward success in achievement of promotion and tenure criteria. The Department Chair oversees annual evaluation of faculty and their progress in achieving annual development goals in teaching, scholarship and service. The Department Chair also works collaboratively within all missions to fairly and equitably enforce workload guidelines in support of faculty development. Other responsibilities include the development and annual evaluation of department staff, the orientation of new faculty and staff within the department, planning for and leading regularly scheduled department meetings that incorporate strategic communications and faculty development opportunities, and establishing strategic goals for the department. The Department Chair also is responsible for the collection and analyses of data for a written annual report of the Department’s contributions to achieving the School of Nursing’s strategic goals.

 

Candidates considered for this faculty position will be individuals “eligible for tenure as full or Associate Professor based on the UABSON appointment, tenure, and promotion (APT) guidelines.” Eligibility for tenure as a full Professor is preferred. A PhD in Nursing or related field is strongly preferred, as is a record of funded research and scholarship that aligns with the department’s foci on family, community, and/or health systems. The position includes 50 percent administrative effort and 50 percent effort in teaching, research, and university and professional service.
