Job Description

Position Summary: Professor Ann Smith, in the Department of Cell & Molecular Biology & Biochemistry at the University of Missouri at Kansas City, is seeking applications for a postdoctoral position. Applicants are sought who have an interest in the biochemistry, physiology and pathology of heme and iron metabolism in the context of hemolytic disorders and conditions. The role of the heme-binding protein hemopexin in heme clearance from biological fluids including plasma and cerebrospinal fluid is of particular interest and has important clinical relevance.

Research Program: Hemolysis and the subsequent release of heme from hemoglobin is responsible for the pathologies associated with a wide range of human hemolytic diseases and injuries. Heme drives pathology in part by activating immune system cells to pro-inflammatory states. To deal with this heme toxicity, mammalian cells (predominantly hepatocytes) express hemopexin (HPX), a glycoprotein that avidly binds heme to facilitate its clearance from plasma and from other biological fluidsviareceptor-mediated endocytosis. The project objectives include continuing investigations on the mechanism(s) of heme clearance by hemopexin for cytoprotection against heme toxicity from hemolysis at the cellular and systemic level. This basic research on hemopexin is needed to improve the clinical therapies for several hemolytic and inflammatory conditions, for example, for plasma protein replenishment therapies. Changes in the levels of hemopexin in biological fluids are potential biomarkers.

This research is multi-disciplinary, and this position is for a scientist with some experience in biochemical techniques including protein chemistry, cell biology (immunofluorescence, microscopy and imaging) and/or CRISPR or siRNA-based functional genomics. It would be beneficial if the candidate already has carried out mammalian cell culture, fluorescence microscopy (including confocal), protein isolation and immunological techniques.

Additional training will be provided as necessary, directed by Professor Ann Smith, who has extensive experience supervising young scientists in the field of heme and iron biology.

Applicants should have a recent doctoral degree in a relevant field including Biochemistry, Molecular Biology and/or Cell Biology and they should have a strong interest in both basic science and biomedical research.

An ability to think critically and creatively, along with strong verbal and written communication skills is essential. Excellent computer skills, organizational and time management skills are also needed. The successful candidate must be able to work independently, as well as in a team environment, and to pay close attention to detail and scientific rigor. They will not only contribute to the development of high-impact research projects by designing and carrying out experiments, and data analyses, but also write manuscripts for publication and grant proposals. The person who fills this position will work in a research laboratory, shared tissue culture facilities of SBC (BSL2), shared instrument facilities (e.g.fluorescent and confocal microscopes) and in laboratories in the School of Biological & Chemical Science; and, also, at the UMKC, School of Medicine, as needed. Minimum Qualifications

The candidate must possess a Ph.D. in a relevant field. ABDs will be considered, but PhD degree must be in hand before start date.

Full-Time, benefits eligible, 12-month, unranked, non-tenure track academic appointment.

Salary

$47,476 – 55,000. Salary is competitive and will be commensurate with experience and qualifications. The salary is based on NIH guidelines.
