Mount Saint Mary’s University

Search for the Chief Information Officer

Los Angeles, California

Mount Saint Mary’s University (MSMU), the only Catholic liberal arts university primarily for women in the western United States, seeks a strategic and collaborative leader to serve as their Chief Information Officer (CIO). Reporting to the Provost, the CIO will have the opportunity to work with a highly talented and dedicated staff to capitalize on institutional momentum around the improvement of technology, a highlighted goal in their newly adopted strategic plan, to fulfill the mission and values of the university.

Founded by the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet, the university is known nationally for its research on gender equity, its innovative health and science programs, and its commitment to community service and global justice. MSMU is renowned for increasing social mobility of its graduates, building leadership skills, offering a dynamic learning experience in both the liberal arts and sciences, and fostering a spirit to serve others in the tradition. MSMU is a Hispanic-Serving Institution and an Asian American Native American Pacific Islander-Serving Institution in the heart of Los Angeles and is one of the most diverse universities in the nation. It provides year-round, flexible, and online programs at the undergraduate and graduate level.  Their unique degree programs for busy adults (the Weekend/Evening & Online College) and their graduate programs are offered to both women and men. MSMU serves approximately 3,000 students, including approximately 600 graduate students. The Chalon Campus houses the majority of traditionally-aged undergraduate students, while just 16 miles away near downtown Los Angeles, the Doheny Campus is home to additional academic offerings, including graduate education. The Chalon campus is in the Brentwood neighborhood overlooking the Santa Monica Mountains and Pacific Ocean; the Doheny campus is centrally located to all that downtown Los Angeles has to offer.

The CIO will be joining a dynamic academic community with a renewed strategic vision focused on educating global leaders for the next century, in which technology plays a key part to ensure educational access for all students. The CIO will work to support a very diverse student body with varying needs and ensure equity across units, disciplines, and modes of classroom delivery by integrating, streamlining, and ensuring efficient technological systems, processes, and infrastructure. In doing so, the CIO will evaluate the existing policies and systems at MSMU, advocate for additional resources, and implement infrastructure changes in support of all students, faculty, and staff. A large task for the next CIO will be ensuring the various systems used to support the operations of the university are better integrated across units and the two campuses for improved service and access to data. The successful candidate will also be expected to address the following opportunities and challenges:

  • Drive and implement a technology strategy in support of the university’s strategic plan
  • Build trust and credibility with administrative and academic leaders to ensure the most effective and efficient operations
  • Inform the technology necessary for an inclusive and effective learning experience for all students
  • Further strengthen a culture of service through improved team support
