The Residence Director, Apartments and Off-Campus Community, engages in day-to-day operational, administrative, and programmatic initiatives for the Office of Student Living for 12,000+ students living in the local off-campus neighborhoods and commuter students, while supporting initiatives directed to the students residing in university-owned apartments located on South Campus.

This includes the following: development and implementation of the Office of Student Living’s educational curriculum; supervising up to 20 student Off-Campus Community Ambassadors (a 10 hour per week student employment position) and [potentially] a professional staff member; crisis intervention; conflict mediation; participation in on-call process; resolution of violations of Office of Student Living policies and the Code of Student Conduct; planning and implementing programs specifically designed to assist students in transitioning to off-campus living; and, other duties as assigned. Qualifications
Master’s degree in student personnel, higher education, or related field required. Evening and weekend commitments are expected. The start date for this position is August.

Previous residence hall administration and/or collegiate off-campus living experience required; one or two years experience working with college students in apartment-style or off-campus living environments is preferred.

Confirmed skills in conflict mediation, crisis intervention, problem-solving, and decision-making.

Must be familiar with staff management, training, conduct systems and administrative processes.

Demonstrated expertise and / or experience in:
Residential facility operations.

Residential safety, security and crisis processes.

Upper-division educational initiatives.

Engaging students via programmatic initiatives designed to support their success.
Ability to plan, implement and work independently.

Demonstrated ability and strong interest to connect with students.

Demonstrated potential to supervise paraprofessional, graduate, and professional staff. Job Specific Qualifications

Residential Education for Off-Campus and Commuter Students
Is a highly visible position in the off-campus neighborhoods and in the Goldstein Student Center, actively connecting with students.

Lives on campus in the South Campus apartment area.

Directs the implementation of the off-campus curriculum. Ensures all activities are of high quality, designed to engage students, and promote student development.

Develops and implements large-scale programmatic initiatives of the South Campus, Off-Campus and Commuter student living team.

Develops educational outreach and programs focused on student transitions and life skill development.

Develop and implement a commuter student education and transition program.

Works with University partners for program initiatives, such as Community Engagement and Government Relations; Barns Center, First-Year and Transfer Programs; Department of Public Safety; Housing; and others.

Provides support and referral to students experiencing conflicts, concerns, and quality of life issues.

Engages with students in the student conduct process.

Provides support to South Campus, Off-campus, and Commuter student living team for large-scale programmatic and operational initiatives, such as health and safety inspections, welcome events, and closing apartment checks.

Supervision
Trains, supervises, and participates in the formal and informal evaluation process with anywhere from 15 – 20 paraprofessional staff in their assigned area and potentially 1-2 full-time professional staff members.

The opportunity may exist to train, supervise and evaluate a graduate practicum student.

Provides indirect supervision of one administrative specialist and leadership of students engaged in voluntary capacities.

Holds regular Off-Campus Community Ambassador ( OCCA ) staff meetings to disseminate pertinent information and one-on-one meetings with OCCAs.

Manages staff feedback and performance concerns.

Engages in performance partnership process.

Regular hall staff meetings to disseminate pertinent information and one-on-one meetings with Resident Advisors and Assistant Residence Directors.

Crisis Response
Serves in tier 1 on-call rotation with other South Campus, Off-Campus, and Commuter student living staff. When on-call, the Residence Director, Apartments and Off-Campus Community is responsible for first-line response to 14,000+ students living on- and off-campus.

Refers students to additional University resources as necessary, including Barnes Center, Dean of Students Office, Hendricks Chapel, Housing Office, etc.

Communications and Operations:
Establishes a schedule for Residential Work Hours that is appropriate for a student-facing, residentially focused role. Schedules work hours that meet the needs of students living on and off-campus. This includes some evening and weekend hours essential for programs and training, as well as some university business hours for meetings and business with other university staff.

Maintains a visible and active presence in the Goldstein Student Center.

Develops process for providing information to students living off-campus.

Develops relationships with HMPID Services, Parent and Family Services, Student Activities, Community Engagement and Government Relations, local landlords, Center for International Services, and ESE Director of Communications.

Strengthens relationships with the Graduate School, Department of Public Safety, and Community Engagement and Government Relations to promote student safety.

Ensures OCCAs have knowledge of procedures, policies, and practices essential to supporting students off-campus.

In collaboration with Assistant Director and Director, assists in the management of the programming and operating off-campus budget.

Supports the South Campus, Off-Campus, and Commuter student living team in communications and operations on South Campus.

Professional Development
Engages in professional development and learning specifically related to the position and equity, diversity, accessibility, and inclusion ( EDAI ). Attends a minimum of EDAI two development / training sessions per year.

Adheres to the Association of College and University Officers-International ( ACUHO -I), National Association of Student Personnel Administrators ( NASPA ) and America College Personnel Administrators ( ACPA ) ethical standards.

Serves on University, Divisional, and Departmental Committees as requested.

Exhibits the ability to engage in in-depth self-reflection and apply what he/she has learned to their professional and personal lives Provides summary of how learning is being incorporated into practice.

Presents workshops and training sessions to staff and students.

Participates in the formal and informal evaluation process.

Participates in Syracuse University and Division Enrollment and the Student Experience staff development, orientation sessions, and on-boarding sessions.
