This position is located in Central, Alabama

Program Priority Area: Human Nutrition, Diet and Health

Geographic Area of Responsibility: Central Alabama (Autauga, Bibb, Chilton, Elmore, Jefferson, Lowndes, Montgomery, Shelby, and St. Clair counties). Each county within the geographic service area has an Extension office; REA office location will depend on availability of space in county offices within the service area.

The Regional Extension Agent ( REA ) is a regional-based professional of the Alabama Cooperative Extension System ( ACES ) who represents the research-based programs and resources available through Alabama A&M University and Auburn University. Regional Extension Agents work collaboratively with County Extension Coordinators, other regional agents, state specialists, and clientele to assess needs then develop and deliver programs within the mission of ACES .

Duties and responsibilities include:
Serve as a contributing member on the Extension Human Nutrition, Diet and Health Program Team. Assists in developing and implementing priority programs in response to identified county and state needs and in developing an annual Team program plan-of-work.

Functions as an effective educator using innovative and creative approaches, including social media. Establishes oneself as a credible resource for teaching adults and youth how to make better decisions regarding health and wellness and dietary needs. Writes and develops quality educational materials to support programming.

Offers comprehensive and complex programming to support long-term change and participates in interdisciplinary programming.

Establish, organize, facilitate, and maintain networks and coalitions at the local and regional levels to multiply efforts and to benefit ACES clientele.

Identifies innovative ways to serve under-served and under-represented audiences.

Cooperates and communicates with County Extension Coordinators, County Commissions, regional agents, state specialists, and appropriate Assistant Director for Programs regarding county and regional projects. Maintains a positive working relationship with staff and clients in assigned geographical and in subject-matter areas.

In cooperation with County Extension Coordinators, follows appropriate fiscal management for programmatic needs. Appropriately administers the materials and financial resources of ACES .

Evaluates major programs and completes system reports when due. Informs and educates the public and key stakeholders about program outcomes.

Secures resources (volunteers, contracts, grants, fees, and donations) to support identified needs at county and regional level.

Ability to work with minimal supervision in an unstructured setting

Assume other responsibilities as assigned

Minimum Qualifications

A Bachelor’s degree in Human Nutrition, Dietetics, Public Health, Food Science, or some other closely related field with at least two years of relevant work experience. Competence or ability to teach human nutrition, health promotion and wellness, food safety or dietary programs. A Master’s degree is preferred and does not require experience to apply.

The successful incumbent will be required to obtain a master’s degree within five years after successfully completing a probationary period.

The successful candidate must demonstrate educational leadership in the application of knowledge through planning for, implementing, and teaching educational programs. They must have excellent and effective interpersonal and written communication skills, exceptional organizational skills and the ability to deliver educational programming and resources to a diverse clientele. This position requires regular travel to carry out Extension responsibilities, and the successful incumbent must have access to reliable transportation.

Successful applicants must possess strong leadership and organizational skills, and the ability to respectfully self-motivate their daily priorities.

Desired Qualifications

A Master’s degree and three years of relevant work experience. Previous extension experience. Demonstrated ability to recruit and manage volunteers. Demonstrated ability to plan, implement and evaluate educational programs.
