The Head of Public Services oversees the Library’s Research and Instruction Services. This position mentors, manages, and supports a dynamic and collaborative team of faculty librarians in developing and delivering innovative services, resources, and programs. The person in this position leads the department in four key areas: marketing and outreach, liaison services, instruction, and research support. This person leads the department in engaging with faculty and students to provide in-depth, specialized Library services. This individual represents the values and priorities of the Regent University Library as it engages in Library-wide projects and discussions and supports liaisons in advocating for faculty and student patrons of the Library. This person will develop a robust professional training program to connect expertise with needs and opportunities. This position reports to the Dean of the University Library.  Essential functions of the position will include:

  • Provide leadership and set priorities and goals for Research & Instructional Services in alignment with the University's and Library's mission and strategic plan.
  • Encourage the exploration and adoption of innovative approaches to research, instruction, and outreach to Library patrons; regularly assess and evaluate services and resources through the development of data informed reporting.
  • Manage all operations of Research & Instructional Services: train, mentor, and evaluate RUL faculty and staff.
  • Mentor faculty librarians and professional staff; encourage RUL librarians and staff to experiment and take risks, to try new approaches, and to share experiences and materials.
  • Identify trends, new protocols, best practices and existing practices that require improvements to ensure that the research and instruction services offered meet the needs of the users and maintains general knowledge of current trends in higher education, academic libraries, and information and educational technology. 
  • Coordinate with Student Services and undergraduate General Education courses.
  • Collaborate in the design, implementation, and assessment of pedagogically strong, curriculum-integrated Library instruction.
  • Oversee training, scheduling, and delivery of in-person and virtual reference and research services in cooperation with other Library public services.
  • Lead an active liaison program to connect expertise with needs and opportunities; coordinate with Head of Technical Services.
  • Coordinate the outreach of Research and Instruction Services with Library Administration. Assist with the library’s social media.
  • Serve as liaison to designated academic departments to provide instruction, research, marketing, and collection support; participate in the provision of in-person and virtual research services and instruction for students.
  • Provide instruction for new faculty and student workers.
  • Engage in professional service and scholarly contributions encompassing best practices, outreach and innovation in research and liaison services; participate in committees and faculty governance in the Library and on campus.

Qualifications:

  • Master of Library Science Degree from an ALA-Accredited program is required
  • Five years of public services experience in an academic library is required 
  • Background in library instruction programs is preferred
