Position Primary Purpose and General Responsibilities
The veterinary technician is a member of the Division of Animal Resources ( DAR ) Veterinary Services team and provides direct support to the veterinarians, principal investigators, and research staff in animal health, training, and technical services. DAR Veterinary Technician will participate on a rotating on-call schedule including after hours, weekends and holidays to respond to animal health emergencies. The employee is collaboratively responsible for daily assessment of the health and well-being of all species under the care of the DAR . Interface with veterinarians to determine, implement and document follow-up treatment or actions. Restrain, administer and monitor anesthesia; troubleshoot anesthetic complications and equipment; operate different types of equipment used in laboratory animal medicine. Provide training for DAR staff and research personnel; collaboratively participate on veterinary observations; report animal/protocol related issues and concerns to the AV or designee; assist with reviewing of policies and guidelines; responsible for maintaining animal health records. Manage DAR surgical suites, procedural spaces, and equipment including scheduling, cleaning, and maintenance. Participate in the development of standard operating procedures, training courses, DAR guidelines and IACUC policies as directed by the Associate Director of Veterinary Services or designee. Minimum Hiring Standards
Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff and student environment or commitment to do so as a staff member at VCU . Bachelor of Applied Science in Veterinary Technology or Associate’s Degree in Applied Science in Veterinary Technology. Incumbent must have a current license as a veterinary technician in the State of Virginia or the ability to obtain licensure within 6 months of hire. Incumbent must have excellent oral and written communication skills to liaise with co-workers and customers; strong ability to multi-task; flexible and adaptable; enjoys education and training of others. Preferred Hiring Standards
Considerable recent experience in clinical veterinary medicine, surgical support, and anesthesia is preferred. Incumbent is preferred to have the following but not required. Considerable recent

working with rodents; Experience with surgical instruments/pack preparation; Experience
with drug calculations & amp; dosages; American Association of Laboratory Animal Science
