Culture and Diversity

Position Summary: The overall purpose of this job is to maintain approximately 200 acres of grounds, parking lots, streets, and sidewalks of all five campuses and additional lots in a way to keep students, staff and visitors safe while providing a functional and visually appealing environment.

Essential Functions:

15% Mowing, line trimming at Hardin Valley and site campuses, bush hogging.

10% Picking up trash and debris on the grounds on a daily basis.

10% Measuring, mixing and applying herbicides, pesticides and fertilizers on all campuses

5% Maintain, repair and clean equipment (oil changes, belts, air filters, sharpen blades, etc), fuel vehicles and equipment as needed

10% Leaf removal in fall.

5% Snow and ice removal in winter on all campuses

5% Maintenance and marking of athletic fields.

15%Maintenance of streets and sidewalks by painting parking lines and identifying trip hazards, pressure washing, installing a variety of directional, informational and road signs, patching potholes on all campuses

5% Install temporary directional event signage and flags for parking and traffic on all campuses

5% Training and continual education (safety, forklift, environmental, etc.)

10% Install and maintain flower beds, plant seasonal flowers and perennial ornamentals and trees, trim and prune shrubs and trees on all campuses

5% Installation and removal of various construction projects and fencing that are related to grounds and recreation at all campuses ( volleyball court, hammock post, disk golf, handrails, stage, etc)

Job Requirements:

· High School diploma with on the job landscaping/grounds maintenance experience in a commercial environment.

· A minimum of three years’ experience in a commercial landscaping environment/industry is required.

Part-time work experience is calculated at 50% credit of full-time work experience

Skills & Abilities:

· Ability to see the big picture, prioritize tasks and understand impact of actions

· Strong problem solving skills

· Ability to work independently or as part of a group

· Takes initiative to get things done without being prompted

· Ability to complete tasks in a timely manner

· Working knowledge of basic horticultural principles and procedures

· Working knowledge and operation of commercial mowers, line trimmers, blowers, etc.

· Ability to lift 60 pounds

· Ability to perform manual labor for extended periods in all weather conditions

· Ability to implement verbal and written instructions

· Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees

Scope of Responsibility: Mixture and application of chemicals, equipment operation and maintenance, plant identification and care, small engine knowledge, knowledge of OSHA safety precautions and PPE, being able to identify and correct any potential hazards. Knowledge of machinery and horticulture along with constant analytical thinking and problem solving. Safety is always top priority. This job is very physical and requires one to display a high level of skill, whether it be in the operation of equipment, or in simply knowing the environment in which one works.

Physical Demands: Physical demands are high. Ability to lift and carry 60+ pounds and perform manual labor for extended periods of time often under unfavorable conditions. Walking miles daily is not uncommon while spraying herbicides which increases the possibility of injury to one’s back, legs, or feet and risk of heat exhaustion or heat stroke. Yes. There are audible warnings of danger and malfunction. Yes. There are visual warnings of danger and malfunction, as well as, almost every aspect of the job. Yes. There are warning lights, mechanical fluids, plant disease, etc.

Hazards: Requires work in extreme weather conditions year round and daily including: heat, cold, rain, snow, dust, exhaust, etc. Requires daily work with equipment that could easily cause minor to severe personal injury or death, i.e. tractors, chainsaws, trimmers, etc. Contact with bees, wasps, insects, snakes and small animals, ivies and plants that can cause allergies and skin reactions. Possibility of poisoning during mixing and application of pesticides and herbicides. Potential for accidents while traveling to branch campuses or moving about campus. Potential to be struck by vehicles while performing work assigned around the roads or parking lots on all campuses.

Pay Rate: $29,040 - $35,250/per year. Pay will be determined based on related work experience above required. To be considered in determining pay, all related work experience must be listed on the application. This is an exempt level position.
