Position Purpose: The Campus Public Safety Sergeant supports learning by supervising assigned Campus Public Safety Personnel and providing a safe and secure campus environment. The Campus Public Safety Sergeant coordinates the supervision and control of persons in or around campus buildings, facilities, and areas adjacent to the school sites.

Education:
- Associates or Bachelor's degree preferred.
Experience:
- Significant experience in Police Work, preferably in a campus setting. Must be Illinois certified police officer or the ability to obtain certification as prescribed by the university.
- Working knowledge of campus regulations in connection with student conduct; laws pertaining to juveniles; controlled substance and their effects upon behavior, customer and activities indicative of undesirable groups
Skills:
- Working knowledge of appropriate federal, state, and local laws including the Campus Security Act of 1997.
- Ability to enforce rules and regulations firmly and fairly.
- Good communication skills; listening, writing, and speaking.
- Ability to work cooperatively with faculty and staff.
- Ability to interpret rules and regulations.
- Working knowledge of the Illinois Vehicle Code and Illinois Criminal Statues.
Physical Requirements:
- Must be Illinois certified police officer or the ability to obtain certification as prescribed by the university.
- Able to pass background check, psychological evaluation, and physical exam. Able to meet physical requirements, including: walking and standing for extended periods, running when necessary, climbing stairs, lifting up to 50 lbs with no assistance.
- Minimum 21 years of age.
- Valid Illinois Driver's license.
- This position requires working: rotating shifts, weekends, holidays, on-call and overtime as needed.
- In the event of an emergency or crisis, may be called in to work or held over until released by the Director of Campus Public Safety or his/her designee.
