Montana Public Radio (MTPR) KUFM invites applications for a Rocky Mountain Front Reporter . This position is based in the region of Montana's Rocky Mountain Front and works under the daily supervision of the MTPR News Director with moderate independence following assigned methods, priorities, and timelines for completing news for broadcast. The position will also coordinate with the MTPR News Director on news content production and delivery. The Reporter must adhere to professional journalism standards and accommodate complex and rapidly changing circumstances under deadline pressure. This position may supervise student interns.

Key responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • News research using internet, newspapers, and other news sources.
  • Develop and maintain news sources.
  • Produce and deliver newscast reports and feature length stories using field recording kits, audio equipment and computers.
  • Upload audio, video, and text content to website, podcasting platforms, and social media platforms as appropriate.
  • Represent Montana Public Radio in Great Falls and answer public inquiries about the station and news policy.
The Rocky Mountain Front Reporter will develop knowledge on their beat of Great Falls and the Rocky Mountain Front, including but not limited to: rural issues, Native American affairs, veterans’ affairs, agriculture, and tourism.

Required Skills
  • Knowledge of journalism ethics and standards of fairness and balance.
  • Excellent speaking and writing skills.
  • Significant technical knowledge of media computer applications, audio recording units, digital cameras, video equipment, audio mixers and audio editing program.
  • Ability to research and comprehend complex issues and translate them into clear, concise news reports.
  • Ability to interview, record, write and digitally edit audio, video and still photography files.
  • Professional demeanor, behavior, and ability to interact with a wide variety of people.
  • Ability to post audio, video and photography online across multiple platforms.
  • Ability to convert radio broadcast content to online reports.
  • Ability to perform under deadline pressures and highly emotional circumstances.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications, or related field.
  • Two (2) years of experience in a reporting role, preferably in public radio or television.

Montana Public Radio is a public service of the University of Montana and is licensed to the Montana University System. MTPR began as a student training facility in 1965. Since then we have become a media network serving western and central Montana and beyond. MTPR is an NPR affiliate with a robust Montana news team including bureaus in Missoula, the Flathead and Helena.

MTPR produces about 50 percent of our program content. We broadcast to a population of about 500,000 Montanans, with an estimated weekly audience of 70,000 listeners. We have about 7,000 members who support the station financially, providing about 75 percent of our annual operating funds.

Position Details

Position Title: Rocky Mountain Front Reporter (Media Programmer)

Position Number: NEW

Department: Montana Public Radio

Work Schedule: Full-time, 1.0 FTE (40 Hours a week). Position requires an alternative work schedule.

Salary: $20/hr

Union Affiliation: FOCUS-MFPE

Probationary Period: Six months minimum
