POSITION TITLE: Physical Chemist

DEPARTMENT SUMMARY:

The Department of Chemistry at Sacramento State offers an American Chemical Society approved BS Chemistry degree, a BS Biochemistry degree, BA degrees with concentrations in biochemistry and forensics, and master's degrees in chemistry, including a biochemistry concentration. The department is undergoing rapid growth and currently has over 500 majors. Our degree programs include a strong focus on hands-on experiences, and we place a high value on faculty mentored research for students. Our graduates obtain industry and government jobs in chemistry, biochemistry, and biotechnology; complete PhD programs in all areas of chemistry; complete professional health degrees in medicine, pharmacy, dentistry, and optometry; and teach in community colleges and high schools in the Sacramento region. Student learning in the college is enhanced through the Center for Science and Math Success programs.

POSITION DETAILS:

This is a tenure-track faculty position at the Assistant Professor rank, beginning August 2022. Salary is dependent upon qualifications and professional experience.

JOB DUTIES:

Duties will include: teaching courses in physical chemistry laboratory; teaching undergraduate and graduate physical chemistry lecture courses; teaching general chemistry courses; advising students; participating in committee assignments and community service; developing and maintaining departmental facilities, programs, and curricula in physical chemistry; writing external grant proposals; and developing a program of scholarship in physical chemistry or closely related area involving undergraduate and graduate students. Normal teaching loads are 3-4 classes per semester (lectures and labs).

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Education:

Ph.D. in Chemistry. ABD considered. If ABD, degree must be completed by August 2022.

Special Knowledge and Abilities:

Applicant must possess a strong background in physical chemistry. Applicants must be able to teach physical chemistry laboratory and upper division/master's level lecture courses in physical chemistry and introductory general chemistry. Ability to develop curricular materials in physical and general chemistry, to instruct students in modern instrumentation, to develop independent research projects involving undergraduate and graduate students and to compete for external grants is required. A commitment to teaching and mentoring students with diverse identities and experiences, and developing curriculum and assessment practices that center on student learning and success.

Experience:

Experience teaching college-level chemistry is required. Applicants must have an experimental background using modern chemical instrumentation. Applicants must be able to develop an experimentally based research program in physical chemistry or a closely related area

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Independent teaching experience and the ability to implement teaching strategies to foster student success in introductory courses are preferred. The ability to utilize technology or other innovative strategies to improve student success and access to high demand courses is preferred. Experience teaching a diverse student population is preferred. Post-doctoral research experience is preferred. Interest and expertise in the lab based fields of spectroscopy, materials, environmental, biophysical, or other applications complementing existing research in the department are preferred.
