Job Description

The UX/UI Designer will serve as a visual designer and UX expert, helping to create improved systems for the President, Senior Vice President and Chief Business Officer, and Executive VP and Provost senior management areas. This position will create compelling, user-focused experiences for Business and Management Systems (BAMS) supported offices by understanding the intersection of user needs and departmental goals. Through research and user-testing, this position will provide clear, creative solutions to complex technical and non-technical scenarios as well as develop strong visual designs that serve as communication tools for our supported offices.
To accomplish job responsibilities, this role will require excellent collaboration skills with a multi-faceted team of developers and designers. This position will create and implement designs in accordance with university, state laws, federal laws, policies, and regulations as well as follow Virginia Tech brand guidelines.
The position must demonstrate a high degree of initiative and self-sufficiency, and the ability to work both individually and on the team, serving as an effective communicator with users and other BAMS team members.

Required Qualifications

A bachelor’s degree in Design, Human-Computer Interaction, Computer Science or a related field
Strong portfolio of design projects
Experience analyzing problems and designing creative solutions
Background in user research and usability testing
Familiarity with information architecture and process design
Experience developing UI mockups and prototypes
Knowledge of HTML/CSS
Proficient in design software (e.g. Adobe Creative Cloud)
Analytical mind with business acumen
Excellent communication skills
A self-starter with ability to manage multiple, simultaneous tasks and projects
Ability to learn new technologies quickly through self-paced research
Ability to operate independently and without supervision and with assigned teams to accomplish organizational goals and objectives
Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information appropriately

Preferred Qualifications

Professional experience as a UX Designer, UI Designer or similar role
Background in graphic design
Background in video production
Experience implementing creative solutions within brand guidelines
Understanding of web accessibility standards
Experience with responsive/mobile design
Experience presenting concepts to clients and managing feedback
