Job Description

The Department of Small Animal Clinical Sciences of the Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine invites applications for a full-time Clinical Instructor position in Emergency Medicine. The successful candidate will join a team of 2 ER clinicians, 1 criticalist, and 7 rotating interns. Some assistance can be provided for student loan repayment.

Responsibilities:
• Ensure timely and accurate triage and care for all cases arriving on emergency to the Small Animal Emergency Service (SAER) during daytime, swing, weekend, and occasionally overnight shifts. Schedules will be based upon the needs of the service. Holiday shifts are divided equitably amongst clinicians. Primary case responsibility is expected in addition to supervision of interns (see below).
o In general, ER Faculty will be expected to manage ~50% or more of the cases that are presented to the SAER during their shift, dependent upon caseload and case complexity.
• Perform emergency soft tissue surgery for patients that present to the SAER. Exploratory laparotomies for patients with GDV, intestinal foreign bodies, pyometra, etc.
o Additional support and/or training is available for interested candidates without significant surgical experience
• Provide on-call/ back-up for interns after their shift has ended and when assigned. On-call will be divided equitably amongst ER Faculty and Critical Care (CC) Faculty. Secondary back-up by a board-certified criticalist is nearly always available.
• Communicate with clients and referring veterinarians in a timely manner for emergency case management, in both written and verbal formats.
• Supervise, direct, and teach students and interns in all aspects of case management, including financial updates for pet owners.
• Work with CC Faculty, house officers, technicians, and students for case transfers and ongoing management and oversight of inpatients.
• Work with all small animal services during case transfer and management of inpatients in the intensive care unit.
• Provide input to be used in evaluation of all students assigned to the SAER clerkship.
• Provide input to be used in evaluation of all personnel working in support of the SAER service, including licensed veterinary technicians and student employees.
• Collaborate with CC Faculty and house officers to improve knowledge of the discipline and management of the section.
o Perform didactic instruction in the classroom and laboratories, as assigned by the section chief in accordance with the assignment as provided by the Department Chair.
o Collaborate on research projects commensurate with the research allocation assigned by the Department Chair.
• Participate in departmental and hospital governance as assigned by Section Chief and/or Department Chair
This is a one year, restricted appointment.

Required Qualifications

• DVM or equivalent foreign degree by appointment start date.
• Experience in small animal emergency medicine and/or successful completion of a small animal rotating internship, by appointment start date.
• Excellent communication skills and interpersonal interactions.
• Demonstrated commitment to diversity and inclusion.
• Must be eligible for a Virginia faculty veterinary license by appointment start date.
• Background check is required.

• Surgical experience or advanced training
• Advanced emergency training (ACVECC or ABVP Certification)
• Advanced clinical experience
• Experience in teaching
• Track record of scholarly activity
