General Description: 
The primary responsibility of a faculty member in the Virginia Community College System shall be to provide quality instruction for the students. The major emphasis shall be on teaching by working with students in classrooms, laboratories, individual conferences, and related activities—to help the student develop their interests and abilities to their fullest capacity to become a better person, a better worker, and a better citizen. 

Duties and Tasks: 
Leadership of the AIR program for the college and instruction of AIR classes. 
Essential Functions: Working with the community and with the advisory board to determine the direction of the program. Collaboration with college units to effectively develop, deliver, and assess AIR curriculum. 
 
As a part of this primary responsibility, the College expects each faculty member to meet assigned classes regularly; submit required records and reports routinely; teach the prescribed courses of study with the established texts; conduct requisite student conferences; hold required office hours; attend to assigned divisional and College duties; contribute to the development of the program of instruction; adhere to the statement on professional ethics in accordance with College policies, procedures, and regulations; maintain current competence in the particular discipline or field of specialization; and advise students. HVAC instructors must earn 1.0 CEU annually in HVACR technical content or educational methodology.

Required KSAs: 
Practical application of the principles of heating, air conditioning, and refrigeration systems. Proficiency in installation and service of HVACR equipment. Demonstrate the skills necessary to teach the fundamental and advanced concepts of installing and servicing HVACR equipment. Ability to design, supervise, and evaluate lab assignments to demonstrate student proficiency. Ability to use instructional technologies. 

Minimum Qualifications: 

  • Associate’s degree in the teaching field with demonstrated competencies OR appropriately related education and/or occupational certifications combined with substantial related experience in the occupational field. 
  • Qualifying academic degrees and coursework should be from a regionally accredited institution. 
  • A minimum of two years of FT related occupational experience is required. Additional experience beyond the minimum is required for those applicants/candidates that do not possess a minimum of an Associate’s degree in the teaching field.  
  • Valid Refrigerant Transition and Recovery Universal Certification (EPA 40 CFR of Section 608) is required.
  • Excellent interpersonal, analytical, and oral/written communication skills. 
  • The successful candidate must be willing to teach a combination of day, evening, and weekend classes. 
  • Successful completion and passing of a criminal background check are required.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in the teaching field. 
  • Some community college or university level teaching experience. 
  • Significant occupational experience (at least 5 years) in field. 
  • Supervisory experience in HVACR. 
  • Experience with commercial or industrial heating, cooling, and refrigeration. HVAC Masters License. 
  • Familiarity with industry-related credentials, such as NATE or ESCO. 
  • Knowledge of HVAC Excellence standards. 
  • Experience teaching a diverse student population. 
  • Experience teaching hybrid courses and demonstrated proficiency and experience in using instructional technologies and learning management systems (e.g. Blackboard or Canvas) with the ability to use technology to enhance teaching. 
  • An active DPOR HVAC (Tradesman) licensure is preferred.
