Senior Financial Analyst – WDR-00027870
What is Cornell University and the Division of Budget
and Planning?
Cornell University, unique among peers, is the federal land-grant
institution of New York State, a private endowed university, and a
member of the Ivy League. The Division for Budget and Planning is
responsible for developing planning assumptions, preparing the
Cornell campus operating and capital budgets, consolidating the
Ithaca campus, Cornell Tech, and the Weill Cornell Medical College
operating and capital budgets. This office also facilitates campus
space planning, manages the capital project budget planning and
approval processes, and serves as the home of institutional
research and planning which leads Cornell in its reaccreditation
and affirmation processes and response to external surveys and
reporting. The Division is also involved in creating and
maintaining automated tools to facilitate budgeting and planning,
providing oversight for its ongoing improvement of campus
administrative functions, and assisting in the formulation of
institutional policies and organizational stewardship.
What you will do:
Reporting to the Vice President for Budget and Planning, the Senior Financial Analyst is a key position that will serve as a special advisor and analyst on issues that have a broad impact on campus-wide operations and strategic initiatives. He/she will liaise with peer financial analysts and strategists in the Division of Financial Affairs, the University Budget Office, Facilities and Campus Services, and University colleges and units to align and coordinate financial reporting, reconciliations and analysis. It is important this role cultivates and facilitates effective relationships with internal and external constituencies to advance the Division objectives in support of the University’s teaching and research mission.
The position will provide guidance and insight to select administrative leaders on budget and planning related financial matters and develop scenarios for short and long term planning that align with university accounting standards and policies while supporting the growth and structure of the University. The senior financial analyst will support the strategic development, high-level analysis and recommendations for and oversight of budget strategy.
Working independently, this role will be expected to plan, organize and conduct research supporting the analytical details that impact university budget-related financials, such as staying on top of current events, financial markets, industry trends and peer analysis. He/she will be expected to lead conversations, projects and initiatives in support for programming, new reporting, updated analyses and implementation strategies that support prudent and innovative financial outcomes.
Hybrid Remote
This position is located in Ithaca, New York. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the successful applicant will be expected to work on the Ithaca campus, although they may be permitted perform a portion of their work remotely in the United States.
The New York Convenience of employer guidelines require New York State individual tax reporting and withholdings for this position. Additional individual state income tax filings may also be required if working temporarily outside New York State.

Additionally, you will have:
Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance or business administration with at least 5 years of experience in a financial analysis role, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Experience in the development and implementation of financial models and long term plans (both strategic and operational); Ability to thoughtfully design and develop reports that reflect metrics that will support the senior leadership members in their decision-making process
- Proven ability to manage complex data and information and conclude key insights based upon thorough analysis; Demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft Office (e.g. Excel, Word, PowerPoint and Outlook)
- Effective ability to work independently and prioritize among multiple deliverables in a changing environment
- Demonstrated ability to take initiatives and to embrace uncertainties; Ability to work effectively as part of a team while maintaining confidentiality
- Effective communication and inter-personal skills are required; Ability to write clear and concise analytical comments; High attention to detail

- MBA or related Master’s degree.
- Proven success as a senior analyst in a complex and diverse organization with higher education experience, state budgeting, contract and grant understanding.
- Knowledge of financial and data management systems, including, but not limited to, Kuali Financial System, Oracle BI, Workday, Longview and other relevant applications
- Knowledge of research techniques and statistical principles and procedures
- Familiarity with the principles of position control and budgetary alignment; Ability to define problem areas, collect data, perform preliminary analyses and make appropriate recommendation.
