Department of Kinesiology - Open Rank Tenure Track Faculty

Research Interests in Implementation Science or Exercise and Sport Science

The past year has magnified the ways that inequities—whether due to race, gender, sexuality, or income—contribute to health disparities. These inequities are a major public health threat and demand a concerted, interdisciplinary effort. At the College of Public Health, we dedicate ourselves to public health in all its parameters, from epidemiology to nursing, from social work to rehabilitation sciences. Social justice has always driven our work; understanding that individual outcomes are intricately tied to the larger systems we inhabit is the foundation of our college.

The Temple University College of Public Health’s interprofessional culture fosters collaboration both within and outside the College.  We value differences among our faculty and believe that we can better serve and understand our Philadelphia community and beyond through the diversity of our individual faculty and our disciplines. Join us in our mission to develop progressive, compassionate researchers, practitioners, and clinicians to build a better tomorrow, grounded in creating the environments and health infrastructure that will make us the healthiest nation.

The Position. We seek faculty with specific expertise in, but not limited to, dissemination and implementation (D&I) science, translation and adaptation of evidence-based interventions, and/or qualitative/mixed methods research. We welcome applications from scholars who apply this expertise to a wide range of populations (i.e., children/adolescents, older adults), health-related outcomes, and settings related to physical activity, nutrition, obesity, or chronic disease prevention.

Additionally, we have interest in considering candidates with research expertise in physical activity, exercise science, sedentary behavior, or a related field that can engage in collaborative and translational research with existing and future faculty at Temple University. Potential areas of study include adaptations to exercise training, developing and testing interventions in different populations of individuals, as well as combined exercise and nutrition interventions.

The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to our mission through scholarly publications, grantsmanship, teaching in the undergraduate and graduate programs, advising students, and serving on departmental, college, and university committees.  We value diversity and seek individuals committed to inclusive and anti-oppressive practices in education, research, and practice.

Qualifications. Candidates should have a terminal degree (PhD, MD) in public health, physical activity, nutrition, exercise science, exercise physiology, kinesiology, or a closely related field. For early career applicants, preferred candidates hold the rank of assistant professor or in a postdoctoral position, but we will also consider exceptional doctoral students who will complete a doctorate prior to appointment. Midcareer and senior applicants should have an active, externally funded research portfolio and record appropriate for a tenured appointment at the rank of associate or full professor. Cluster hiring of research teams including senior and early career faculty may be available. Salary and benefits are competitive and commensurate with experience.

The Department. Kinesiology is respected for its academic programs, research, and service to the University and the local community. The undergraduate program comprises degrees in Exercise and Sports Science and Kinesiology, with a newly launched MPH in Nutrition program to train our future public health dietitians. The Department is responsible for delivering courses in anatomy and physiology, as well as physical activity, to the wider university community. Under new leadership, the Department of Kinesiology is embarking on a bold expansion in developing academic programs that align with the overall public health mission of the College. In addition to strengthening our current programs, future academic programs and research initiatives will focus on the intersection of physical activity, nutrition, obesity, and chronic disease prevention with the social determinants of health. Situated in a vibrant, urban environment, the department places a high priority on examining local inequities and working proactively with community partners to address existing health disparities.

The College. Devoted to an interprofessional environment for education, research, and practice, the CEPH-accredited College of Public Health consists of academic units in the public health disciplines, health professions, and the School of Social Work, enrolling approximately 4,200 students. The College’s research aims to understand the fundamental factors that affect the health and well-being of individuals and populations by examining health problems through foundational research, policy and practice, and the development and dissemination of evidence-based interventions. We focus on social determinants of health and social justice with strengths in cancer, obesity, HIV, substance abuse, mental illness, mobility research, cognition and language, developmental disabilities, organ transplantation and aging. CPH research is funded by the National Institutes of Health, Department of Defense, National Science Foundation, Gates Foundation, and other major private foundation, state and federal agencies. The College is home to an Office for Community Engaged Research and Practice, the Center for Obesity Research and Education, and the Collaborative on Community Inclusion. The Office of Clinical Affairs and Interprofessional Education leads our clinical activities, including the COVID-19 RapidVax effort and forward-looking IPE within the College and throughout the university. The college is staffed by a robust complement of seasoned professionals including robust offices of Communications and Marketing, Information Technology, Sponsored Research, and Academic Affairs.

The University. Temple is an urban, research-intensive Carnegie R1 university located in historic and culturally rich Philadelphia, the nation’s 6th largest city. The city was ranked 3rd by the New York Times as a world tourist destination. The National Science Foundation ranks Temple among the top 100 universities in the country for research expenditures. Temple is the 6th largest provider of professional education in the nation and includes Schools of Medicine, Pharmacy, Podiatry, Law, and Dentistry and research centers.
