The past year has magnified the ways that inequities—whether due to race, gender, sexuality, or income—contribute to health disparities. These inequities are a major public health threat and demand a concerted, interdisciplinary effort. At the College of Public Health, we dedicate ourselves to public health in all its parameters, from epidemiology to nursing, from social work to rehabilitation sciences. Social justice has always driven our work, understanding that individual outcomes are intricately tied to the larger systems we inhabit, is the foundation of our college.

Qualifications and Interests. We seek faculty with expertise in all areas of interest, but particularly welcome researchers with agendas focused on one or more relevant areas of interest related to health systems leadership, staff resilience, healthy work environments, retention and stabilizing the workforce in the wake of the pandemic, or areas of particular focus within the college, including cancer, health communication, and family caregiving. In addition, tenure-track faculty whose research explores resilience and culture in healthcare would also be of interest.  The ideal candidate reflects the growing emphasis on healthy work environment, staff resilience, retention, and stabilizing the workforce in the wake of the pandemic.  We will seek an individual who can engage with our partners in the community and across the college and the university to explore the conditions, interventions, and impact of workplace stress. This individual will be well suited to interprofessional collaboration which is evaluated by our accrediting body and essential to the success of future nurses, leaders, and academics.  Our partners are well positioned to partner with us to seek awards that support programming, diversity, and quality improvement that improves outcomes. 

Demonstrated effective collaboration with teams and partners across disciplines as well as passion to understand and intervene to improve factors that shape the health of individuals, families and communities with a particular interest in populations impacted by health disparities. The desired candidates will bring to Temple a deep interest in advancing interprofessional practice and transdisciplinary research. For early career applicants, preferred candidates hold the rank of assistant professor or a postdoctoral position, but we will also consider exceptional doctoral students who will complete a doctorate prior to appointment. Midcareer and senior applicants should hold a doctorate and have an active, externally funded research portfolio and record appropriate to warrant a tenured appointment at the rank of associate or full professor. Cluster hiring of research teams including senior and early career faculty is encouraged. Salary and benefits are competitive and commensurate with experience.

The Department.  We are a department of 26 faculty at present offering 2 accredited programs to some 500 students. Our 8-semester Bachelor of Science in Nursing program, with freshmen admission is recognized for its high NCLEX pass rate, clinical affiliations with outstanding health care facilities in the Philadelphia area, innovative 5-semester community home rotation with a population-based, service-learning focus; and dedication to our community and social justice. Our Doctor of Nursing Practice program includes a post baccalaureate option with specialty concentrations in Adult Gerontology Primary Care and Family Individual across the Lifespan. Our post master’s DNP option prepares graduates for practice leadership roles in a variety of health care settings. Expansion of our graduate program offerings is anticipated and will include additional DNP specialties and a master’s direct entry program for non-nursing college graduates.

Dr. Mary Terhaar, a foremost national expert on preparing and developing the nursing workforce and translating evidence into practice and education, recently joined Temple and was appointed Department Director. She is engaging in an ambitious agenda to develop the research portfolio of the department, advance graduate programming, and build on the department’s strengths in grant support for students.

The College. Devoted to an interprofessional environment for education, research, and practice, the CEPH-accredited College of Public Health consists of academic units in the public health disciplines, health professions, and the School of Social Work, enrolling approximately 4,200 students. The College’s research aims to understand the fundamental factors that affect the health and well-being of individuals and populations by examining health problems through foundational research, policy and practice, and the development and dissemination of evidence-based interventions. We focus on social determinants of health and social justice with strengths in cancer, obesity, HIV, substance abuse, mental illness, mobility research, cognition and language, developmental disabilities, organ transplantation and aging. CPH research is funded by the National Institutes of Health, Department of Defense, National Science Foundation, Gates Foundation, and other major private foundation, state and federal agencies. The College is home to an Office for Community Engaged Research and Practice, the Center for Obesity Research and Education, and the Collaborative on Community Inclusion. The Office of Clinical Affairs and Interprofessional Education leads our clinical activities, including the COVID-19 RapidVax effort and forward-looking IPE within the College and throughout the university. The college is staffed by a robust complement of seasoned professionals including robust offices of Communications and Marketing, Information Technology, Sponsored Research, and Academic Affairs. 

The University. Temple is an urban, research-intensive Carnegie R1 university located in historic and culturally rich Philadelphia, the nation’s 6th largest city. The city was ranked 3rd by the New York Times as a world tourist destination. The National Science Foundation ranks Temple among the top 100 universities in the country for research expenditures. Temple is the 6th largest provider of professional education in the nation and includes Schools of Medicine, Pharmacy, Podiatry, Law, and Dentistry and research centers.  It is also the home of the Fox Chase Comprehensive Cancer Center.
