Hours are 7:30 a.m. until 6:00 p.m. with some flexibility required

The successful candidate will aid in the care and treatments, diagnostics and procedures of patients in the Orthopedic service of the Bailey Small Animal Teaching Hospital and will assist Neurology & Soft Tissue Surgery, as needed. This position will also provide support to the veterinary students in charge of primary patient care and the general cleaning, stocking and maintenance of equipment in the service area.

Essential Functions

Duties include but are not limited to: operates, maintains, repairs, cleans laboratory equipment, clinic area, and maintains supplies; performs, instructs, and demonstrates specialized veterinary care techniques and procedures; assists veterinarians in the care of patients requiring specialized care; inspects facilities, equipment, and supplies daily, as well as observes health status of animals, environmental conditions, temperature, and sanitation; provides specialized care and monitoring of animals before, during, and/or after procedures; administers medicine, and treatment according to prescribed instruction; observes and records vital data, abnormal signs, body weight, food/water intake of animals, and collects and labels specimens; performs emergency first aid such as emergency resuscitation or other life-saving procedures; schedules appointments for diagnostic procedures and advises referring veterinarians about the use of specialized equipment; may be responsible for, or assist in, billing clients, inputting charges, and/or similar tasks.

Requirements for Additional Job Levels

Depending on the combination of education and experience, selected candidates may be hired as a Veterinary Assistant II or III, Technician, or Specialist and assigned Levels I, II, or III . Salary range determined by eligibility for Level I, II, or III .

Consideration for Veterinary Assistant II requires:
A high school diploma or equivalent plus 2 years of experience in the care and comfort of animals.

Consideration for entry-level Veterinary Technician requires:
1. Associate’s degree or higher in a technical or scientific field related to the area of assignment.
2. Active license with the Alabama State Board of Veterinary Medicine as a Veterinary Technician, have met all requirements to become licensed, or have passed the Veterinary Technician National Exam ( VTNE ). Veterinary Technician certification or license must be obtained within 6 months of employment.

Consideration for entry-level Veterinary Specialist requires:
1. Associates degree in a technical or scientific field related to area of assignment plus 3 years of experience in the performance of advanced/specialized veterinary technician duties or in Veterinary Technology .
2. Entry into Level I requires an employee to have an active license with the Alabama State Board of Veterinary Medicine as a Veterinary Technician or to have passed the Veterinary Technician National Exam ( VTNE ) and have met all requirements to become certified as a Veterinary Technician Specialist ( VTS ). Entry into Level II and III requires an employee to have obtained certification as a Veterinary Technician Specialist ( VTS ).

Education Level

When a candidate has the required experience, but lacks the required education, they may normally apply additional relevant experience toward the education requirement, at a rate of two (2) years relevant experience per year of required education.

For Technician entry Level:
Active license with the Alabama State Board of Veterinary Medicine as a Veterinary Technician, have met all requirements to become licensed, or have passed the Veterinary Technician National Exam ( VTNE ). Veterinary Technician certification or license must be obtained within 6 months of employment.

For the Specialist entry Level:
The above, plus must meet all requirements to become certified as a Veterinary Technician Specialist ( VTS )

Desired Qualifications

Experience in the care and comfort of animals, as well as detailed knowledge in the field; the ability to obtain needed information to select and adapt methods and procedures; and skill in using specialized techniques and equipment to resolve operational problems not full covered by precedents.
