Assistant Professor, tenure track, Job#16910

Arizona State University, Tempe, Arizona

The School of Historical, Philosophical and Religious Studies (SHPRS) seeks an early-career scholar who investigates the history of Indigenous Peoples of the “North American West.” We are defining the region in its broadest terms, cultural, geographic, and political. We include the entire western region of North America, a geographic focus that transcends national boundaries, to include borderlands and diasporic communities. Scholars whose work engages one or more of the following themes are particularly encouraged to apply: migration and diasporic communities, kinship, sovereignty, race and ethnicity, and/or gender. We are especially interested in applicants who are reflective about their methodologies in ways likely to engage both public and academic audiences – that is, scholars who can lead conversations not only about what we know but about how we know it. We wish to hire a scholar who will be able to work in a multi-disciplinary environment, engaging a diverse student audience across multiple learning platforms to provide exemplary teaching, research, and community engagement.

The full-time, academic year, tenure-eligible appointment will begin in fall of 2022 and includes a 2/2 teaching load. The successful candidate will be required to teach courses both in their area of research and as required by the major or graduate programs. They will also be required to render service to the university, to the academic profession, and to the public.

Required Qualifications:

  • A PhD in History or Indigenous Studies with an emphasis in history by the time of the appointment.
  • Evidence of research excellence in the field of Indigenous history.
  • Demonstrated ability to teach a diverse student body.
  • Scholarship and service that reflects a commitment to social justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion.
  • The ability to communicate clearly with a wide range of people, both academic and non-academic.
  • Ability or willingness to teach online.

Desired Qualifications:

Demonstrated interest in one or more of the following: migration and diasporic communities, kinship, sovereignty, race and ethnicity, and/or gender.

Arizona State University, a Research One Institution, is one of the largest universities in the U.S. with approximately 41,000 undergraduate and 9,000 graduate students at the Main campus in Tempe, one of several communities that constitute metropolitan Phoenix. These communities provide excellent museums and restaurants and several professional sports teams. Phoenix also includes beautiful natural areas suitable for outdoor recreation.

The appointment will be in the History faculty of the School of Historical, Philosophical and Religious Studies (SHPRS), the largest transdisciplinary school in the humanities at ASU, located in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. History offers both on-ground and online undergraduate and graduate (MA) programs, as well as an interdisciplinary PhD. For more information please see: https://shprs.asu.edu/history.

ASU’s campus is located in the midst of three of the twenty-two Indigenous communities in Arizona—the Salt River, Gila River, and Ak-Chin reservations. Therefore, SHPRS is dedicated to teaching Indigenous history, philosophy, and religion, supporting Native students, and collaborating with Indigenous nations in the region to protect Native sovereignty. The history faculty is committed to public facing scholarship that engages these issues.

To guarantee full consideration, applicants must apply online at http://apply.interfolio.com/95219 submitting the following:

  • A letter of application stating their qualifications;
  • a CV clearly identifying areas of specialization;
  • name and contact information for three references;
  • a statement (250-300 words) addressing how their past and/or potential contributions to diversity and inclusion will advance ASU’s commitment to inclusive excellence.

Further supplemental materials, such as evidence of teaching effectiveness, may be requested of the final candidates, but please do not send them in your initial packet.

The applicant’s last name must appear in the name of each document that is uploaded as part of the dossier. The cover letter may be addressed to Dr. Katherine M.B. Osburn, Search Committee Chair, School of Historical, Philosophical and Religious Studies, Arizona State University, Tempe, Arizona 85287.  Questions about the position should be directed to the search committee chair at Katherine.Osburn@asu.edu.

Application deadline is November 7, 2021. If not filled, applications will be reviewed weekly thereafter until the search is closed.

The College values our cultural and intellectual diversity, and continually strives to foster a welcoming and inclusive environment. We are especially interested in applicants who can strengthen the diversity of the academic community.

A background check is required for employment.
