General Description of the Position
Delaware State University is seeking an assistant or associate professor for the Elementary Education Program, the largest of the teacher preparation programs. The successful candidate will have demonstrated expertise in teaching and advising at the undergraduate level. Active engagement in research, grant writing and involvement in state, regional, national, and international organizations are expected. Deep familiarity with and the ability to integrate Specialized Program Association (SPA) expectations into the curriculum are essential. Assistant/Associate Professors may teach both undergraduate and graduate students within their fields of expertise.

Essential Functions

  1. Teach courses across the curriculum based on consultation with program directors and department chair.
  2. Maintain office hours in order to be available to students on a regular basis for advising and counseling on matters regarding their academic performance and progress in class.
  3. Be available on a regular basis to students who have been identified as advisees on matters pertaining to the students’ program of study.
  4. Monitor students’ progress through the program with accurate records and timely advisement.
  5. Participate in University/College/Department/State/Professional committees and community at large activities. Accept a fair share of committee assignments and serve conscientiously as a member of committees appointed or elected to and fulfill the specific duties of any chair or office accepted.
  6. Participate in curriculum and assessment development and analyze data routinely to study student growth and impact. This includes but is not limited to the reporting required through CAEP accreditation reviews, SPA reviews, and departmental data days.
  7. Participate in syllabi development and/or revision. Improve, update, enrich, and revise courses periodically to keep them current.
  8. Actively pursue external funding through grant writing.
  9. Actively engage in scholarly research and other creative activities.
  10. To demonstrate and maintain professional competence and knowledge of Elementary Education, literacy (including mathematical literacy), culturally responsive teaching, and child development and strive to keep informed of contemporary developments in the field of specialization through reading and research, related workshops, etc.
  11. Aspire to excellence in teaching by conducting each class according to the schedule and the highest professional standards.
  12. Distribute policies concerning attendance, course requirements, and criteria for grading to each student at the beginning of each semester.
  13. Present to students during the term and within a reasonable time, evaluation of their academic performance and progress in the class.
  14. Treat all students fairly, impartially, and with understanding.
  15. Maintain adherence to course descriptions in accordance with the syllabus and the University Catalog.
  16. Accept willingly a fair share of Departmental and University duties.
  17. Adhere to deadlines and schedules established for the timely reporting of grades and for other matters related to student registration and record-keeping.
  18. Be familiar with the mission of DSU as a Historically Black College and University (HBCU).

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
The candidate must possess the following skills and abilities to perform essential functions with or without reasonable accommodations:

  1. Serve as a resource and problem-solver for the Education Department
  2. Exceptionally strong communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills
  3. Develop systems to monitor students’ progress
  4. Manage data utilizing Excel and have the ability to learn and use new technologies
  5. Interact effectively and professionally with others and exemplify professional courtesy in all interactions and while representing DSU
  6. Remain up-to-date on policy and practice related early childhood education, and educator preparation
  7. Solve practical problems and deal with a variety of variables in situations where limited standardization exists
  8. Capacity to plan, establish priorities, and handle multiple tasks and projects within a set timeframe
  9. Engage in ongoing training related to job functions

Qualification Standards

  1. Education: Ph.D, Ed.D. in a related field (one or more degrees in Elementary education specifically).
  2. Ability to engage in scholarly activities in Elementary Education, Literacy, Child Development, Family Engagement, Early Intervention or related topics.
  3. A proven record of procuring funding for research and initiatives is preferred.
  4. Experience using Blackboard or another learning management system as well as the ability to develop and instruct on an on-line teaching platform is highly desirable.
  5. Ability to teach online courses through distance education.
  6. Experience as both a certified teacher and leader in Elementary Education.
  7. Knowledge of current best practice in the field of elementary education including early literacy, interventions, issues related to children in poverty, developmentally appropriate practices, etc.

Performance Standards:

The criteria for evaluation in this position include, but are not limited to, the following:

  1. Demonstrated knowledge of the DSU core values.
  2. Demonstrated ability to provide instruction to students that is standards aligned (SPA and state) and grounded in best practice.
  3. Demonstrated documentation of progress/completion rates for students in courses, and candidates of the program and systems to ensure students navigate program transition points in an orderly manner.
  4. Demonstrated evidence of alignment of program assessments, curriculum and instruction to CAEP and SPA standards.
