This includes complete and timely information about the process for applying for financial aid at Furman, the timing of our decisions, the resources available to finance the costs of education, the role of borrowing and working, and how the “financial fit” of an institution pertains to choosing to apply to and enrolling at Furman.

Job Description:

Position Title: Financial Aid Counselor

Reports to: Director of Financial Aid

Function: To provide excellent financial aid counseling to prospective students, their parents, and to our current students and their parents. This includes complete and timely information about the process for applying for financial aid at Furman, the timing of our decisions, the resources available to finance the costs of education, the role of borrowing and working, and how the “financial fit” of an institution pertains to choosing to apply to and enrolling at Furman.

Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree and two to three years financial aid experience or an equivalent combination of education, training and related experience in the profession.
  • Strong interpersonal communication, writing, and problem-solving skills.
  • The ability to work independently with careful attention to detail.
  • Demonstrated aptitude in customer service.
  • Demonstrated commitment to work within a diverse environment and interact openly with individuals of different backgrounds.
  • Proven ability to use multiple software systems and a high comfort level with learning new technology.
  • Proven ability to set work priorities and manage multiple projects simultaneously in a fast-paced environment while meeting deadlines.
  • Ability to handle confidential matters with discretion.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience with PowerFAIDS and related financial aid software, including COD, NSLDS, and ELM.
  • Experience with Institutional Methodology and need analysis.
  • Counseling experience in a higher education setting.
  • Knowledge of Federal Title IV and state regulations.
  • Ability to provide top level customer service, advice, and counseling to students and families as they make decisions about college planning and financing.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with others
  • Ability to work as a team with inter-office and intra-office personnel to accomplish university goals and responsibilities
  • Must be competent in public speaking roles
  • Must have the ability to handle difficult situations with diplomacy
  • Must communicate with honesty, transparency, and openness both within the office and outside the office
  • Must have excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Experience in common office software, particularly Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
