Job Summary

The Museum Shop Assistant is responsible for enhancing the museum visitor’s experience by offering exceptional customer service and creating an inclusive and welcoming atmosphere in the Museum Shop. The ideal candidate will bring a friendly and positive tone to the Shop and engage with visitors about their experience at the Museum. The Shop Assistant helps with the overall daily operations of the Shop, including performing sales, entering data and cash in/out reconciliation with the POS system, keeping the Shop clean and organized, restocking product and maintaining displays, assisting customers with sales, making product suggestions for visitors, and sharing information about the various items sold in the Shop as well as exhibitions and programming at the Museum. The Shop Assistant works closely with colleagues in the Shop and in the Visitor Experience and Safety teams.

This is a part-time, non-benefited position with regular weekend hours. The museum shop’s operating hours are 10:45 to 4:15 Tuesday through Sunday. This position will be required to work on Saturdays and Sundays.

Essential Functions

Responsible for enhancing the experience of Museum visitors by offering exceptional customer service and being an integral member of the SCMA Visitor Experience team.

Must possess a friendly, personable manner, an interest in art, and a passion for working with people.

Assist in the daily operations of the Museum Shop.

Assist customers/visitors in the Museum Shop by offering suggestions, opinions and product information about the items for sale.

Opening/Closing store and cash register/POS system.

Daily reconciliation of the cash register.

Cleaning, restocking, and maintaining merchandise displays.

Light data entry into the POS system.

As Visitor Experience at SCMA is a collaborative team effort, there will be occasional cross-coverage between the Shop and the Museum admissions desk.

Other Functions

Participate in regular training, including training on customer service and evacuation and safety procedures. Attend regular SCMA all-staff meetings.

Minimum Qualifications (knowledge, skills, education, experience, certifications, licenses)

High school diploma with demonstrated experience building positive customer relations.

Demonstrated desire to work with and support a diverse learning community.

Ability to meet the physical requirements of this position.

Experience working with individuals from diverse backgrounds.

Preferred Qualifications

Previous experience working with cash register and POS system preferred.

Bi-lingual or multi-lingual a plus.

Skills

Excellent customer service, customer relations and communication skills; exemplary interpersonal skills; strong communication skills; good judgment. Basic computer skills. Promptness, reliability, and honesty are also required in this position.

Additional Information

This is a part-time, non-benefited position with regular weekend hours. The museum shop’s operating hours are 10:45 to 4:15 Tuesday through Sunday. This position will be required to work 10:45 to 4:15 on Saturdays and Sundays.

Anticipated pay - $16 per hour.

As a condition of employment employees must be immunized against COVID-19 on or before their first day of employment. Proof of vaccination status will be required. Individuals may seek medical or religious exemption with HR, but must do so prior to their arrival.
