The Jesuit School of Theology of Santa Clara University (JST) invites applications for an Assistant or Associate rank position in New Testament with a specialization in Gospels, to begin Fall 2022. Areas of sub-specialization are open, but may include Johannine Literature, Pauline Studies, and Catholic Epistles.  In addition to firm grounding in traditional methods of interpretation, applicants with facility in such approaches as Literary, Cultural, Postcolonial, Feminist, Ecological Criticisms of texts, and ability to teach all levels of Greek are invited to apply.  Particular consideration will be given to candidates attentive to cultural context, interdisciplinarity (for example, New Testament and Spirituality, New Testament and Interreligious Dialogue, New Testament and Ethics, Latinx Hermeneutics, etc.).   The  candidate  must  demonstrate  promise/success  as  a teaching  scholar  and  understand  and  support  the  school’s  Ignatian  mission.  Facility in on-line pedagogy  (or willingness to acquire this) is a strong desideratum.  Ability to teach in Spanish is a positive consideration.

JST faculty are teaching scholars who balance a commitment to quality teaching with active programs of research and creative scholarship. Ideal candidates should demonstrate not only potential for excellent graduate teaching, but also promise in sustained research and scholarly publication and in service to the school, the GTU, the community, and the Church. The successful candidate will mentor students in JST’s ecclesiastical programs (STL and STD), as well as our various master’s degrees and GTU programs.

Initial interviews with a selected pool of applicants will take place via Zoom during the first week of November with finalists invited to campus later that month.  

The successful candidate will:

    teach four graduate courses per year on the semester system, including foundation courses in New Testament and topics in in this testament for doctoral and advanced master’s students. The successful candidate will offer a range of courses that will serve JST and GTU’s extraordinarily diverse student body and programmatic needs. direct (if appropriate to rank), and contribute to, comprehensive exam, thesis, and dissertation committees;  develop a research agenda that continually leads to peer-reviewed publications;  provide service to the school and the GTU as appropriate to rank.  Have, or be willing to develop, expertise in rigorous and engaging on-line education.

  1. Completion of the Ph.D. or equivalent degree in New Testament by the time of application.


  • Evidence of effective and excellent teaching. Experience mentoring/directing graduate work is desirable.

  • Evidence of an agenda for scholarship and promise of publication, or sustained publication (depending on rank), in the area of expertise.
