Job Summary

The Laboratory for Atmospheric Space Physics (LASP) is encouraging applications for a Mechanical Engineer to support space flight instrumentation designs and proposal efforts. This role will invent solutions to complex mechanical design challenges.

Who We Are

LASP at the University of Colorado Boulder (CU) began in 1948, a decade before NASA. We are the world’s only academic research institute to have sent instruments to all eight planets and Pluto.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

  • Generating opto-mechanical designs.
  • Work on dust instrumentation designs.
  • Modeling hardware in SolidWorks and using PDM Pro.
  • Using ANSYS Workbench and or NASTRAN to verify design solutions.
  • Creating drawings using Solidworks and applying GD&T to the drawing.
  • Work with a multi-disciplinary team.
  • Document interfaces and requirements.
  • Generate mechanical solutions for various proposal efforts.
  • Perform other mechanical engineering tasks including mass properties, harness routing, production planning, etc.

What We Require

  • BS degree in Mechanical, Aerospace Engineering, or related technical field from an accredited institution.
  • At least six years of experience.


What You Will Need

  • Ability to function well in a team based environment.
  • Attention to detail.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Resourcefulness and creativity.
  • Knowledgeable of spaceflight instruments, mechanisms, and spacecraft.
  • Ability to take personal responsibility for projects and work independently.


What We Would Like You To Have

  • MS degree in Mechanical, Aerospace Engineering, or related technical field from an accredited institution.
  • CAD design experience with SolidWorks.
  • Experience creating mechanical drawings.
  • Designing and building opto-mechanical instruments
  • Experience with Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T).
  • Previous experience working on proposals is a plus.
