Brief Summary of Work for this Position

The Coordinator reports to the Assistant Director of Campus Recreation/Competitive Sports. The Coordinator will assist with the overall planning, coordinating and assessment of a comprehensive Competitive Sports Program. Responsibilities include planning, assessing, and managing the day-to-day operations of the Sports Officials Development Program, assisting in the management and scheduling of the Intramural Sports Program, and serve as an advisor for select sport clubs within the Sport Club Program. The Coordinator also plans, assesses, and coordinates assigned Special Event and Extramural programs and handles various administrative tasks.

Specific Functions / Responsibilities:
  • Assist the Director of Campus Recreation, Associate Director and Assistant Director in the operation and administration of a multi-faceted recreation program
  • Assist with the development of an overall plan inclusive of goals and objectives for the implementation of the Intramural Sports, Sport Clubs and Special Event Programs
  • Coordinate the planning and evaluation of the Sports Officials Development Program, including: training clinics, on-field/court evaluations, awards and recognition
  • Recruit, hire, train, schedule, supervise, mentor and evaluate competitive sport team members (such as: program assistants, supervisors, and officials). Supervise the daily work functions of assigned staff in program delivery based on programming needs, including payroll reports
  • Serve as an Advisor/Mentor to assigned sport clubs to include re-registration process, budget management and annual creation of budget proposal, provide trainings (conflict resolution, risk management, tournament scheduling, etc.) or assist with potential new club registration
  • Assist with Sport Club Council Advisory Board to include trainings, annual reviews of manuals and procedures, etc
  • Collaborate with marketing staff to identify and develop marketing strategies and promotional efforts to educate campus community about competitive sport programming
  • Share in the training, supervision, and mentoring of assigned graduate assistants and intern/practicum students
  • Assist in administrative tasks to include: policy and procedure development, budget preparation (tracking and reconciling on monthly and annual basis, and projections), risk management policies and emergency procedures, and completing annual reports
  • Share in evaluating, updating, and revising all manuals, handbooks, waivers, and informed consent forms, team member personnel files (performance appraisals, performance coaching memos, and certification logs) and outdoor facilities’ policies and procedures
  • Maintain competitive sport inventory and documentation and coordinate routine inspections of equipment and facilities, maintenance schedules, and safety checklists
  • Maintain affiliations with national, regional, and state recreation associations and attend related meetings/conferences. To include serving on extramural tournament committees, and actively pursue local officiating opportunities for personal growth or student development opportunities
  • Support university programs outside of Campus Recreation through collaboration, outreach, and mentorship (example would be e-sports)
  • Build effective relationships with various departments across campus
  • Create a welcoming environment that supports UNCW’s commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions
  • One year of intramural programming experience
  • Supervisory or related transferable skills
  • Ability to delegate tasks as appropriate


Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills & Experience

  • Master’s Degree in Recreation, Physical Education, Exercise Science/Physiology or related field
  • Graduate Assistant experience in collegiate recreation programming
  • 2 years of direct experience with:
    • Student personnel supervision at the collegiate recreation level
    • Implementation and management of Officials Training at the collegiate level




Required Certifications or Licensures

CERTIFICATIONS OR LICENSURE REQUIRED : (or can become obtained after hire):
  • American Red Cross Instructor training for First Aid, CPR / AED, Blood borne Pathogen.
  • American Red Cross CPR / AED /First Aid Certification
