The Division of Student Life at West Virginia University is seeking applications for a Director of Student Media . About the Opportunity

As the Director of Student Media, you will report to the executive director of Student Enrichment. You will be responsible for the management, budgeting, staffing and successful operation of the Daily Athenaeum, U92 The Moose and Prospect and Price Creative.

In addition, the Director of Student Media is responsible for all aspects of Student Media and for implementing innovative practices that result in respected and appreciated news organizations and profitable business operations; ensuring a welcoming community; and providing students valuable experiences and opportunities that prepare them for success upon graduation.

What you’ll do:
  • Leadership . The director leads a team of professional employees who are student-focused and dedicated to providing opportunities that enable students to learn and grow. The director is responsible for ensuring that the media operations comply with all state, federal and University laws, regulations and policies, and adhere to journalism best practices while producing valuable journalism.
  • Vision . The media industry is constantly evolving. The director must be vigilant in studying and adopting new ideas and trends to keep student media on par with the industry. The introduction of new skills and programs prepares students for post-graduation jobs and provides new sources of revenue and student involvement. The director must work with peers at other schools and study industry research to anticipate needed change.
  • Management. The director manages all financial aspects of the organizations including budgeting, reconciling, oversight of spending and exploring opportunities for additional revenue and funding. The director is charged with stewardship and improvement of facilities and equipment to include ensuring that students have access to media industry-standard equipment and software they will encounter in jobs and internships.
  • Education. Student Media is an educational adjunct of the University that allows students the hands-on opportunities to apply the skills and knowledge learned in the classroom. Through training, critiques, campus-wide surveys and interviews with campus and community leaders, students are provided the opportunity to reflect and learn. The director works with professors and staff in the Reed College of Media as well as editors across the state to provide students with internships, jobs and other opportunities.
  • Production. Student Media produces editorial, advertising, marketing materials, videos, podcasts and curated music. The director is responsible for ensuring that all content is ethical, engaging and accurate.
  • Alumni. A strong and supportive alumni network for both U92 and the DA provides student support, financial assistance and a valuable sounding board for the director. The director identifies, cultivates and supports these networks through innovative events and frequent communication.
About Student Media, Student Media at West Virginia has the strong support of the University. It is housed in a stand-alone building, has a professional staff of six and receives funding through a dedicated student activity fee and advertising revenue. The staff adheres to the policies of the College Media Association and the Associated Collegiate Press which prohibit prior review of student content and ensure the independence of Student Media.

The Daily Athenaeum, WVU’s independent student newspaper, is produced on Thursdays and distributed to 130 locations around Morgantown and inside The Dominion Post to 15,200 readers. More than 100 students work in the editorial, advertising and marketing departments. Content is posted each day to thedaonline.com which averages 4,000 daily readers. The DA’s weekly newsletter has more than 32,000 subscribers.

U92The Moose is WVU’s student-run radio station. It is a 24/7, 2,600-watt terrestrial/ internet-streaming station with a news, sports and DJ staff of more than 120 students. The station has offices in the Mountainlair, production studios in the DA and maintains a broadcast tower and equipment on Willey Street. It complies with all FCC regulations and copyright restrictions.

Prospect and Price Creative is a creative services firm established in January 2019 that works with local small businesses and campus partners in need of ad agency work. Eighteen student workers produce brochures, logos, videos and marketing booths

Qualifications :

Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in Journalism and/or Communications or related field, or an equivalent combination of education and directly related experience
  • A minimum of six (6) years of progressively responsible experience involving:
    • Print or broadcast journalism
    • Design and development of a communications plan
    • Budgeting and supervising a staff
  • Proficient written and oral communication skills.
  • Editing, budgeting, excellent interpersonal and social skills.
  • Ability to perform assessments to determine program effectiveness.
  • Experience leading a news organization through change and creating innovative and experimental coverage
Preferred Qualifications:

Experience working in a higher education setting is preferred.
