Job Summary

The Academic Support Coordinator will work with the lead on this project: a cohesive tutoring, peer mentoring and academic support program for student-athletes by utilizing technology and strengthening connections/relationships with various academic support services across campus in Student Athlete Success Services. This position coordinates student success programming and prepares a variety of reports for analyzing data. This position provides advising services to a select group of academically sound student-athletes.

The incumbent will also have a caseload of five student-athletes who are academically at-risk and will meet with them weekly to provide learning support to those five student-athletes. This position is responsible for the development, coordination and implementation of specified projects related to EAB (Spartan Connect), as well as other uses of technology in the support, documentation and communication of student-athlete academic progress.

Key Responsibilities
  • Arranges academic support, mentoring, and tutoring, assuring that the student-athletes progress towards their degree
  • Coordinates individual and group tutorial/study sessions for English, Math, General Education level courses, and WST preparation
  • Assists with training, scheduling, and monitoring peer mentors, peer tutors, and study hall monitors for the SASS unit
  • Offers career counseling, including assistance with resume and cover letter writing, job searches, internships and networking
  • Provides social mentoring, helping student-athletes adjust to life as a college athlete, which is often a high profile and high pressure role for a young adult
  • Coordinates the department's use of EAB Executive Advisory Board (Spartan Connect) for scheduling, tutoring, advising, and reporting
  • Works with Assistant Director in regards to eligibility, including processing transfer evaluations and tracers
  • Assists students in their educational progress, exploring service, leadership and extracurricular opportunities, and setting goals
  • Maintain accurate records and files in compliance with all university, conference and NCAA rules and regulations
  • Coordinates and collaborates with student support offices, departments across campus, and campus advising offices for student referrals as appropriate
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Ability to acquire knowledge of organizational procedures and activities of the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics and the campus as a whole
  • Ability to analyze data accurately and adopt effective course of action
  • Ability to carry out a variety of complex assignments without detailed instructions by the Work Lead
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Knowledge of NCAA legislation, rules and regulations, especially as they apply to academic support, student development programs and SAAC
  • Ability to create student development and study skill programming
  • Ability to develop and deliver appropriate learning support strategies
  • Ability to advise students individually or in groups on routine matters, and general knowledge of principles of individual and group behavior
  • General working knowledge of the principles, practices and trends of Division I higher education and academic support
  • Ability to create programs that are responsive to a diverse and multicultural environment
  • Ability to organize and evaluate academic plans
  • Excellent customer service and public relation skills
  • Ability to perform accurately in a detail-oriented environment, and to handle multiple work priorities, organize and plan work and projects
Required Qualifications
  • Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in one of the behavioral sciences, public or business administration or a job related field
  • Two years of professional experience in one of the student services program areas or in a related field. A master’s degree in a job‑related field may be substituted for one year of professional experience.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree in related field
  • 2 years of experience a higher education, athletic academic setting
  • Experience with applicable University policies and procedures
  • Excellent written communication skills
  • Experience with PeopleSoft


Compensation

Classification: Student Services Professional II
Anticipated Hiring Range: $4,304/month - $4,439/month
Salary Range: $4,304/month - $6,120/month
