The College of Education, Department of Instruction & Curriculum Leadership, is seeking to add a full-time, nine-month, tenure-track Assistant Professor of Science Education with expertise in secondary science education or a closely related field (with a research emphasis in science education) beginning August 15, 2022.  The applicant’s teaching practice should demonstrate commitment to and experience with (1) secondary science methods; (2) diversity, social justice, and equity in order to promote effective teaching; (4) culturally relevant and sustaining practice; and (5) comprehensive and sustained professional growth opportunities to enhance professional practices involving diverse populations. The desired candidate will have a background in the content area of secondary science education, scholarship in the field of science and STEM education, and experience in teacher education, professional development, and field-based learning experiences.  The candidate should have a commitment to teaching and service at a large research-based institution that integrates high leverage practices into their coursework and professional development.  Ideally, the candidate should have knowledge of the edTPA, university teaching experience, including face-to-face, hybrid, and online learning environments, and classroom teaching experience in middle or high school science.  Applicants will be expected to demonstrate a commitment to excellence in teaching, scholarship, and service. QUALIFICATIONS

Required

  • Earned doctorate (obtained by August 1, 2022) in science education or a closely related field with a research emphasis in science education
  • Evidence of excellence in teaching a minimum of 3 years in the 6-12 setting
  • Demonstrated content knowledge in science (e.g., a bachelor's degree in one or more of the science disciplines, or equivalent)
  • Evidence of or clear potential for a high-quality research program
  • Commitment to the educational and cultural needs of diverse populations

  Desired

  • Experience working on externally funded projects
  • Experience working with the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS)
  • Experience with the design and implementation of integrated STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) education
  • A record of external funding
  • Expertise in teacher professional development
  • Experience preparing candidates for the edTPA
  • Expertise in the use of technology in instruction
  • Teaching experience at the undergraduate or graduate level
  • Experience with online instruction

 RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Teach and supervise face-to-face and online secondary science and STEM related graduate courses
  • Engage in research, writing, and other scholarly activities related to science education
  • Implement a significant on-going program of focused scholarly research and publication, including collaborative efforts
  • Provide service and leadership to national professional organizations, the university, college, and department
  • Provide professional service and outreach to surrounding community partnerships and schools
  • Chair and serve on master’s and doctoral Committees
SALARY & BEGINNING DATE

Salary will be competitive and commensurate with qualifications. The position is a nine-month, tenure-track appointment with options for paid summer teaching and administrative responsibilities. The University offers an excellent benefits package, and the state of Tennessee has no state income tax. Memphis and the surrounding areas maintain a very low cost of living relative to most parts of the country. The anticipated date of employment is on or before August 15, 2022.

The Department of Instruction and Curriculum Leadership (ICL) offers undergraduate degrees that lead to both licensure and non-licensure tracks. The department also offers graduate degrees leading to licensure with the Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) and non-licensure options with the Master of Science (MS), and Doctorate of Education (EdD). In addition, the department also offers nationally recognized certificate and endorsement programs.
