Randolph-Macon College is seeking a Campus Safety Officer to join our Campus Safety team. This position serves and protects the community and property of the college, responds to and documents reports of incidents and requests for service.  The officer is responsible for promoting positive community relations in the performance of his or her job duties.  The successful candidate will possess physical fitness as this position requires extensive walking, stair climbing and other physical activities that may include but not be limited to, lifting, bending, kneeling, jogging.  Officers patrol the campus on foot, bicycle and vehicle. Officers will assist in the preparation of set-ups for athletic and other special events. Officers are required to support the academic environment by maintaining a peaceful and orderly community. Officers provide excellent customer services to students, faculty, staff, and guests of the college.

 ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (include but not limited to the following:)

  1.         Patrol the campus, observing building while being mindful of the safety of building occupants. 
  2.         Conduct physical security checks of buildings by observing locks, window, and articles. 
  3.         Prepare incident reports of safety and fire hazards immediately.
  4.         Prepare incident reports of violations of law and college rules and regulations.     
  5.         Treat all persons equally with dignity, respect and fairness regardless to race, creed, and social status.  
  6.         Take necessary actions to safeguard and assure the community’s safety. 
  7.         Respond to request for assistance to members of the college community.
  8.         Work at the Dispatch Desk on rotating schedule when on duty.
  9.         Operate the college switchboard through answering and directing callers to various offices and       resources.
  10.       Initiates and maintains communication with all college constituents and record requests for assistance through dispatch reports.
  11.       Be familiar with the College Calendar (EMS) and stay current on College events, activities in and around the campus community.  Disseminate that information    accordingly 
  12.       Activate ERT (Emergency Response Team) and RMC Alerts when appropriate.
  13.       Process ID cards in DSX Operating System to include meal plan updates through Odyssey & C-Board.
  14.       Monitor campus security cameras.
  15.       Monitor fire phone for alarm notifications.
  16.       Maintain the college directory as needed.
  17.       Initiate after hour protocol for Residence Life & Physical Plant response.
  18.       Maintain and update Duty Log and Day to Day Operation Binder.
  19.       Maintain key inventory as needed. 
  20.       Maintain Buildings, Welfare, and E-Phone checklists.
  21.       Performs other duties as assigned by Director, Assistant Director, or Office Manager.

 QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: Perform duties outwardly free of social and ethnic prejudices which are incompatible with effective public relations in a college environment being fair and objective with all people.

 KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:

  1.         Ability to exercise independence in assuming responsibility and control in situations requiring prompt action.
  2.         Ability to analyze a problem objectively in terms of alternative courses of action 
  3.         Ability to probe and obtain critical facts.
  4.         Ability to describe facts and events effectively.
  5.         Ability to prepare reports using the principles to correct grammar usage.
  6.         Ability to relate to others in a positive, pleasant manner.
  7.         Knowledge of Virginia laws and practices.

TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE: High school graduate, or GED equivalent.  Possess a valid Virginia driver’s license and able to undergo satisfactory criminal background and DMV investigation.  Certified CPR and First Aid provider.  Previous experience in working in a collegiate environment preferred.   Possess basic computer aptitude, and event planning experience in a similar environment.  Individual must be able to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.  Training in mediation, verbal de-escalation, and diversity.

 WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The duties of the position involve physical risk when officer comes in contact with possible armed, belligerent trespassers and injured persons emitting body fluids. Position is considered essential, requiring an employee to report during inclement weather.  Physically fit to protect self and to protect and service the community. Work hours are scheduled on a rotation basis. This position often requires an employee to be involved in stressful and sensitive situations.
