Position Summary

The Department of Civil, Structural and Environmental Engineering ( CSEE ) at University at Buffalo (UB) invites candidates to apply for a position of Professor of Empire Innovation, at the rank of Associate Professor or Full Professor. The selected candidate will receive support through the SUNY Empire Innovation Program ( EIP ) which recognizes exceptional scholars with proven track records of externally funded research.

We invite prominent leaders working in the areas of infrastructure resilience, in pursuit of innovations in the built environment in response to climate change-induced hazards, increasing encroachment of communities into areas prone to hazards, insufficient energy and water infrastructure, and aging transportation systems. Examples of the relevant infrastructure (often referred to aslifelinesystems) include transportation, coastal and inland flood protection, energy, water, and wastewater. We particularly encourage candidates whose scholarship engages system-level analysis and multi-system interdependencies.

The Professor of Empire Innovation will complement traditional Departmental strengths in extreme events, structural/bridge/geotechnical engineering, transportation systems, and environmental/water-resources engineering, as well as more focused capacity in wind/fire/materials engineering and environmental sustainability.

The Professor of Empire Innovation will teach courses at the graduate and undergraduate levels, mentor graduate students, and maintain an active externally funded research program. We are particularly looking for candidates who can operate effectively in a diverse community of students and faculty members and share our vision of helping all constituents reach their full potential within a professional culture that values equity, diversity, and inclusion.

About the Department
The CSEE Department offers BS degrees in civil engineering and environmental engineering, both accredited by the Accreditation Commission of ABET . At the graduate level, CSEE offers MS/PhD degrees in civil engineering, MS/PhD degrees in environmental and water resources engineering, an MS program in engineering sustainability, and an Advanced Graduate Certificate in Bridge Engineering.

The Department currently is comprised of 34 tenure-track faculty, 4 teaching faculty, approximately 500 undergraduate majors, 90 masters’ students and 60 doctoral students. Seventeen of our faculty members have joined CSEE since 2014, and we are recruiting four additional faculty members (including this position) during the academic year 2021-2022.

CSEE scholars routinely engage in collaborations with colleagues from diverse academic disciplines and participate in numerous cross-disciplinary research centers including the Institute for Bridge Engineering ( ISB ), Center for Computational Research ( CCR ), MCEER, the Center for Geohazards Studies, the Stephen Still Institute for Sustainable Transportation and Logistics ( ISTL ), the Structural Engineering and Earthquake Simulation Laboratory ( SEESL ), and the Institute for Research and Education in eNergy, Environment, and Water ( RENEW ).
