Electronic and Information Technology Accessibility Officer

Position Summary

The Electronic and Information Technology ( EIT ) Accessibility Officer provides central oversight, technical expertise and guidance, leadership, and vision to create and maintain the University’s EIT accessibility program. As the key advocate and expert on EIT accessibility, this position plays a vital role to promote inclusion through seamless access, and mitigate institutional risk for failure to comply with EIT accessibility laws, standards, and policies. With the consultation of the UB Digital Accessibility Advisory Committee, the incumbent collaborates with campus leadership, departments, and committees to ensure the accessibility of the University’s programs, services and activities.

The EIT Accessibility Officer’s responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

• Reviewing websites, web-based applications, and digital materials for compliance with accessibility standards using various methodologies including automated testing tools, manual assessments and usability tools.
• Acting as subject matter expert and consultant to campus stakeholders and partners to respond to questions about accessibility and requirements of EIT and course-related/online content.
• Participating in the procurement process by working collaboratively with Procurement and campus departments seeking to purchase high-impact EIT products, communicating with potential vendors to review accessibility of products under consideration, and working with current providers and vendors to increase the accessibility of products used by UB students, employees, and members of the public.
• Keeping current with SUNY’s EIT related efforts, evolving EIT trends, and applicable policies, procedures, requirements, standards, or guidelines.

The incumbent must possess a wide range of competencies to effectively carry out the responsibilities of the position including strong technical web development skills, advanced knowledge of the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines ( WCAG ), and a fundamental understanding of all applicable accessibility laws and policies. The position requires outstanding leadership, facilitation, collaborative, analytic, and interpersonal skills.

Minimum Qualifications

This position requires a Bachelor’s Degree and a minimum of three years in web accessibility or master’s degree or professional certification with 1 year of experience. Equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

Specific experience should include creation of accessibility reviews and corrective action plans, website accessibility remediation, and providing guidance on the interpretation of relevant accessibility standards.

Required skills include:

• Extensive knowledge and experience with web technologies ( HTML, CSS, JavaScript, ARIA, and web content management systems)
• Extensive knowledge and experience with WCAG accessibility standards and guidelines, and WAI - ARIA techniques for web content
• Experience with assistive technologies ( JAWS, VoiceOver, NVDA )
• Experience with accessibility audit and quality assurance tools and processes
• Excellent written and oral communication skills including the ability to effectively communicate complex technical concepts to less technical stakeholders in a clear and digestible manner.
• Strong organizational and project management skills.
• Knowledge of disability law including but not limited to the Americans with Disabilities Act ( ADA ) and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 (Section 504
