Working closely with the Director of Human Resources the Human Resource Manager promotes Marian University’s Catholic Franciscan mission and identity by working with area leadership on talent acquisition and talent management, staff development, employee relations and engagement, performance management, compensation, benefits and other HR duties as assigned. The HR Manager will play a key role in advancing Marian University’s goal to attract, develop, engage and retain a workforce aligned with advancing the mission and strategic plan. The most qualified candidate will be conversant in HR practices in recruitment, employee relations, performance management, retention, staff development for employees, workforce planning, benefits and compensation.   

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Actively engages the Catholic Franciscan mission and identity of Marian University by modeling the Franciscan Sponsorship Values, honoring the legacy of the founding congregation, promoting unity in diversity, and integrating the Catholic Franciscan Intellectual traditions in courses, programs, and services.
  • Develop strong working relationships with key stakeholders
  • Work with managers on performance management and employee relations issues including performance improvement and corrective action where necessary as well as assessing career growth and talent needs of area
  • Communicates policies regarding compensation and position evaluation
  • Analyzes market salary rates with respect to compensation levels for supported areas, communicate compensation and job evaluation practices
  • Completes job analyses and job evaluations in consideration of compensation adjustment requests
  • Conduct grievance and disciplinary investigations; advises on the corrective action steps and supports supervisors on administering disciplinary actions
  • Develop and communicate HR and University policies and procedures
  • Serve on various departmental and University committees
  • Provide input/feedback on process and initiatives to improve HR operational effectiveness to develop key metrics
  • Stay abreast of trends, laws and regulations, best practice and technologies related to HR and organizational development
  • Lead and participate on special HR projects and perform  HR departmental duties as required
  • Additional duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources Management, Business Administration or a related field is required. SHRM certification or Master’s degree desired.
  • At least 2-5 years of HR related employee relations, employment, compensation, benefits and/or organizational development experience required
  • Ability to take initiative and be proactive
  • Excellent judgment, problem solving, customer service, diplomacy and interpersonal skills
  • Clear and effective written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work in a team context and to set priorities, manage competing demands and to provide timely response to urgent issues
  • Experience in HR consulting/ generalist role and providing guidance to management and staff
  • Personal computing skills, including working knowledge of word processing, spreadsheet and management software applications (Knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel,)
  • Ability to deal with sensitive and confidential matters with tact and discretion
  • Proven experience in higher education or public-sector environment desired
  • Ability to remain flexible in order to handle and prioritize workload from various sources
  • Ability to keep current on new skills and learning opportunities related to HR field
  • Must be able to understand organizational governance and mission in fulfillment of responsibilities
  • Perform other related departmental duties as required
