The Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT), part of the State University of New York and an  internationally renowned college of art, design, business and technology with a strong emphasis  on liberal arts, invites applications for an Assistant Director of Residential Education in the Residential Life Department.  FIT Residential Life houses approximately 2,300 undergraduate students living within 4  residence halls comprised of traditional and apartment style housing.

 


Job Description:

Reporting to the Associate Director of Residential Life, the Assistant Director of Residential Education is a full-time, twelve-month, live-in professional staff position responsible for providing leadership of a residential area of campus.  This includes the coordination and implementation of student learning, professional and paraprofessional staff supervision, and student conduct and crisis response.  The Assistant Directors are also instrumental in contributing to the success of Residential Life and the FIT Division of Student Success through department-wide and campus activities including move in/out, student leadership retreats, summer housing, departmental committees, assessment, and more.  Responsibilities and areas of oversight are subject to change based on the needs of the department and the campus community.

Primary job responsibilities & duties

  • Participate in the development and implementation of an intentional residential education program for either the 27th Street or 31st Street community including the creation and execution of student learning outcomes, lesson plans, assessment, and community development
  • Supervise, develop and train professional Residential Life staff, including direct supervision of Residential Education Coordinators
  • Supervise, develop and train a full time Office Manager for respective area
  • Advise student leaders in the Residence Hall Association (RHA), including providing guidance, feedback, and professional development
  • Facilitate staff development, foster staff unity and teamwork, motivate staff and empower them to promote student learning and development
  • Take part in a 24/7 on-call duty rotation and oversee the implementation of duty and crisis response protocols
  • Manage student conduct and crisis response processes within the residence halls. This includes assisting staff with student concerns, crisis and emergencies, serving as a resource for students and staff, and facilitating referrals as appropriate
  • Facilitate the student conduct process utilizing the department's restorative approach
  • Serve as a point of contact for students, staff, and family members, providing information and  maintaining appropriate communication with a wide variety of constituents
  • Chair/Co-chair a departmental committee and provide leadership to an assigned area
  • Work to advance the College, Division of Student Success, and Residential Life's strategic plan and goals through participation in goal setting, program implementation, committee/task force work and assessment efforts
  • Work closely with housing operations to assist with the overall management of  Residential Life Housing Operation processes, including residence hall opening and  closing, facilities and maintenance concerns, and housing assignments
  • Participate on College committees, selection processes and other assignments as needed.
  • Participate in departmental, divisional, and college-wide trainings and professional development workshops
  • Maintain up to date knowledge on residence life, housing, student affairs, and higher education trends, issues, and practices; recommend and implement new approaches to departmental work
  • Attend state, regional and national conferences relevant to stay current with national best  practices
  • Serve as a Campus Security Authority and assist in reporting incident information as needed
  • Serve as a responsible employee for allegations regulated under Title IX
  • Other duties as assigned

 

 


Requirements:

  • Masters degree in education, student affairs or related field
  • 4-6 years of full-time experience in residential life and housing, residential services, or related field

Knowledge and Skills Considered Essential for Success:

  • Effective written, verbal and technological communication skills.
  • Knowledge in the areas of residential curriculum, crisis intervention, conflict mediation, student and leadership development theory, student conduct administration, restorative practices, academic support and safety and security programs.
  • Excellent supervisory, teamwork, conflict resolution, project management, and organizational skills
  • Demonstrated commitment to sustainability, equity, and social justice; experience working with a  diverse student population, supporting the needs of marginalized students, and engaging students and staff on issues of diversity and social justice
  • Knowledge of FERPA, Title IX, Clery Act and other state and federal laws as they relate to residential life administration
  • Engagement in the field of student affairs and higher education with an interest and  willingness to learn, implement, and share best practices and new approaches
  • Capacity to work in a 24-hour/7 day environment with the ability to quickly respond to and handle situations for the entire residential campus
  • Positive attitude and excitement toward work. Ability to take initiative, work independently, and be a strong team member. The ideal candidate must have strong communication skills and be able to exercise sound judgment. A good sense of humor and a desire to laugh often are highly valued.

Additional Information:

  • Evening and weekend commitments will be required to fulfill the duties of the position
  • While serving on-call, staff members must remain within close proximity to the campus. Assistant Directors are expected to serve on call during holidays, weekends, and evenings as needed to ensure 24/7 coverage.
  • Assistant Directors are expected to make their on-campus apartment their primary residence.
  • This position is considered to be an essential personnel position for the department, and as such, Assistant Directors may be required to report to work/remain at work even if classes are cancelled, and/or the campus is working on limited operations in an emergency.

Compensation is commensurate with experience.  Staff in Residential Life are employees of the FIT Student Housing Corporation, a 501(c)(3) entity.  Compensation and benefits are determined through the Housing Corporation governance process and are subject to change as such.
