The History program of the School of Humanities, Arts, and Cultural Studies at Arizona State University is seeking to hire a full-time, tenure-track assistant professor specializing in African-American history, to begin in Fall 2022. The chronological period of US history is open. The ability to teach US women's history is a desirable additional specialization. The successful candidate will teach US history surveys to undergraduates, existing courses in US history, and history courses of their own design that will attract students to the program. This hire is part of an effort to promote a diversity of viewpoints and research perspectives within the School. A PhD in History is required by the time of the appointment. We will also consider candidates from related fields such as African-American Studies, Ethnic Studies, American Studies, or Women and Gender Studies, but familiarity with historical methods and the ability to teach history are required. 

Candidates should have an active research agenda and evidence of excellence in teaching. The School of Humanities, Arts, and Cultural Studies is housed within the New College of Interdisciplinary Arts and Sciences at Arizona State University's beautiful West Campus, located in Phoenix's West Valley. The College encourages engaged undergraduate teaching and collaborative research across disciplines. All tenure-track faculty within the School perform teaching, research, and service. The typical teaching load is 2-2.

Essential Functions of the Position:

  • Carrying out peer-reviewed research in the area of specialization within African-American history
  • Teaching US history surveys, existing courses in US history, and history courses of their own design that will attract students to the program
  • Engaging in service at the School, College, and (eventually) University level

 

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • A PhD in History or a related field, such as African-American Studies, Ethnic Studies, American Studies, or Women and Gender Studies, on a topic or topics within African-American history, is required by the time of appointment. Familiarity with historical methods and the ability to teach history are required. 

 

Desired Qualifications:  

  • The ability to teach US women’s history
  • Demonstrated commitment to working successfully with a diverse student population, including first-generation college students.
  • Experience teaching online.
