The Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT), part of the State University of New York and an internationally renowned college of art, design, business and technology with a strong emphasis on liberal arts, invites applications for a Crisis Counselor (Associate Coordinator) in the Counseling Center.


Job Description:

Reporting to the Director of the Counseling Center, the Associate Coordinator serves as an initial screening agent and a risk assessor for students seeking counseling, providing administrative and counseling support to students contacting the Counseling Center.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Conduct screening/initial risk assessment of students
  • Conduct intake interviews of students presenting with emergencies, and/or with urgent or critical concerns and make appropriate assessments
  • Assist with triage, referrals and case disposition
  • Provide bridge sessions as students are being connected to community providers as needed
  • Provide workshops and develop programming to assist at-risk students.
  • Conduct follow-up outreach with students referred to outside providers after the triage appointments
  • Present assessed cases twice weekly at case disposition meetings to facilitate case disposition
  • Facilitate crisis intervention (hospitalization and follow-up)
  • Alert Director of Counseling/counseling staff to any urgent cases
  • Facilitate referral of students to internal counselors and psychiatry
  • Facilitate referral of students to community providers
  • Provide residential life reentry interviews/assessments
  • Offer recommendations to students for on-going wellness care, academic support and psychotherapy groups.
  • Develop and organize workshops and events

 Office Management Administrative Duties

  • Assist with front desk coverage and greet students and answer the telephone for the Counseling Center main line, respond to chat, and schedule appointments
  • Triage walk-ins, answer telephone calls, respond to chats
  • Establish, analyze and coordinate assessment measures and reports for the department. Assist on data collection and compiling data for bimonthly reports.
  • Analyze clinical workflow using EMR software to aid in program development and to assess the efficacy of the service delivery to enhance student learning and retention efforts
  • Conduct daily community outreach via social media to expand Counseling Center's outreach, reaching underserved students
  • Update and maintain Counseling Center FIT website
  • Assist in updating and maintaining database of referral and community resource options
  • Approves employee timesheets
  • Department calendar management to ensure office coverage during summer period
  • Advanced department webpage design
  • Identify and implement multimedia resources to support Counseling Center services and programming, i.e., incorporate podcasts on department website
  • Write weekly newsletter and post daily on social media stories and tips on wellness and advertise Counseling Center offerings.
  • Other duties as assigned. 





Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelors required, Licensed clinician (LMSW, LCSW, PhD, PsyD, Ed. D, LMHC) in NY State or actively working toward one, preferred.
  • 5 years in working in a behavioral health setting with at least 2 years of clinical experience in a college counseling center or hospital setting
  • Case management experience
  • Prior experience conducting risk assessments
  • Prior experience with EMR
  • Prior work with adolescents and young adults
  • Prior experience doing crisis intervention
  • Knowledge of community mental health resources and facilities
  • Experience in conducting mental status exams
  • Experience in working using a short-term model of care
  • Experience with a wide range of diagnosis, diagnostic assessment, and crisis intervention
  • Sensitivity to multicultural, under privileged, LGBTQ, and trauma issues
  • Strong interpersonal skills to communicate effectively with the college community and to represent the counseling center at campus-wide events

Additional Desired Experience:

  • Experience in a college mental health setting 
  • Experience in inpatient facilities/hospital setting
  • Digital native, familiar with posting and messaging on all social media platforms 
  • Experience with DBT techniques
  • Experience with providing group psychotherapy
  • Experience working in a stepped care model of service delivery
  • Experience with suicide assessment and prevention
