Department Summary
The College of Design (DSGN) is a multidisciplinary academic unit with approximately 100 tenure-related faculty members, 150 non-tenure related faculty members, 50 staff, and 1,700 student majors in 9 departments and programs (23 degree programs). DSGN has a general fund allocation of $26 million with operations in both Eugene and Portland.
Position Summary
The Studio Technician, under the direction of the Manager of Administrative Services, serves as the primary officer in charge of support operations in the fabrication lab (fab lab) used by the students and faculty in UO Portland. They are responsible for ensuring that area-related needs, workshops, and labs are met in a manner that allows them to operate professionally, efficiently, and within their budgetary means.
The Studio Technician receives guidance and direction from the College of Design Facilities Services team and the UO Risk Management office in providing direct support of the fab lab, deploying appropriate resources to effectively accomplish objectives, and maintaining a clean, safe, and orderly facility with equipment in good working condition. Sound environmental practices and regular recycling, as applicable, are essential. The Studio Technician is responsible for identifying potential conflicts and issues related to the support of the lab space, workshops before problems arise, and makes recommendations to the appropriate constituents on how to deal with any identified issues. The Studio Technician operates with a high degree of independence within the scope of the assignment.
Minimum Requirements - Associate's Degree and three years of work experience (paid or
volunteer) supporting community programs that serve children, youth
or adults; OR
- Bachelor's Degree and one year of work experience (paid or
volunteer) one year of which must be working in youth development
programs, adult education, teaching, program delivery or related
functions; OR
- Five years experience in a field related to the duties of the
position AND a high school diploma or equivalent.
AND - Demonstrated oral and written communication skills.
- Demonstrated skill to work with diverse audiences.
- Demonstrated skill to use computers for word processing, data
management, and communications.
Professional Competencies - Demonstrated ability to manage tasks where successful
collaboration and coordination with other supervisors was essential
due to operating conditions, with an understanding of collaborative
decision-making.
- Demonstrated ability to evaluate multiple work requirements and
prioritize accomplishment in accordance with life, health, safety,
customer, and academic mission impacts.
- Demonstrated ability to manage several requirements or projects
simultaneously.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills and the ability
to read and write in English for the purposes of reviewing budgets,
preparing reports and understanding policies and safety
information.
Preferred Qualifications - Prior experience working at University of Oregon or a similarly
complex institution of higher education.
