The Director of the Project Management Office (PMO) reports to the SAVP of Information Technology and is responsible for managing strategic projects in Information Technology, Media Technology and Productions, Human Resources and Finance. In addition to management of the PMO, this position also serves as a hands on project manager for high profile projects. This is an exciting opportunity to grow and expand the art of project management at Emerson College.

  • Collaborate with various functional department leaders to define, prioritize and develop projects. Ensure alignment with departmental and/or college values and strategic initiatives. Identify opportunities for efficiency between areas of the college, process improvement for the community, and adding value to existing investments.
  • Ensure the PMO follows the current IT Project Management framework, which outlines project management processes and documentation requirements. Further develop the framework to higher stages of maturity.
  • Maintain a comprehensive project portfolio and score card of all PMO projects including regular executive reports. Ensure the portfolio meets governance needs and maintain critical benchmarks and metrics to articulate the status of any portion of the portfolio at any time.
  • Manage the project intake, hold, and closure processes ensuring all stakeholders are informed and decision making is transparent.
  • Provide regular analysis of project status, remediating problems as they arise, effectively communicating risk, and manage accountability of project team members to ensure project success.
  • Develop and maintain vendor relationships, and ensure vendors meet their obligations and the quality of work is fulfilled within contractual agreements.
  • Oversee the use of project management tools, ensure consistency in practice, identify gaps in the tools and work to improve their functionality.
  • Provide support and training to Directors and staff outside the PMO so project management methodologies and best practices are adopted and consistently utilized beyond the PMO.
  • Perform direct project management for the largest, most complex projects working with stakeholders and team members to ensure successful completion.
  • Manage three project managers ensuring they consistently follow project management methodologies and provide excellent service to project teams and stakeholders. Work with PMs and other areas to determine which projects require dedicated PM support versus consultation and framework guidance.
  • Other duties as assigned.


Required Skills:
  • 10 years of project management experience, or educational background and equivalent work experience.
  • Prior management experience
  • Self-starter, work independently under minimum supervision.
  • Previous experience in managing large and complex projects within budget and on schedule.
  • Exceptional documentation, communication and interpersonal skills. Able to show examples of previous project portfolios, scorecards, and charters.
  • Vendor management, negotiation and conflict resolution skills.
  • Extensive knowledge of project management methodologies and tool sets.
  • Ability to communicate, motivate and persuade the project team, and gain support from management to achieve the desired project goals.


Preferred Skills:
  • Project Management Professional (PMP) certification.
  • Experience leading teams of project managers
  • Experience with modern project management/portfolio management platform
  • Previous experience working in a Higher Ed setting.


Grade of Position: A20E

Scheduled Weekly Hours: 36.25

Hiring Range: $131,550.00 - $138,750.00
