Department Summary
The Office of the Vice President for Research and Innovation (OVPRI) promotes excellence in research at the University of Oregon. Research, both basic and applied, is fundamental to the mission of the University and is essential to Oregon's economic and civic vitality. The office is committed to enhancing these efforts by providing administrative and financial support for sponsored programs, including identification of funding opportunities, proposal submission, research compliance, and contracts and grant administration. The office supports interdisciplinary research centers, essential core facilities and emboldens innovation and economic development through strategic partnering and technology transfer initiatives. Research Finance and Business Administration (RFBA) provides financial support for Research service groups (technology transfer, compliance, sponsored projects, proposal development, technology, and administrative service groups). RFBA also provides financial support to the graduate school, research core business services, research centers and institutes, and the Vice President for Research and Innovation.

Position Summary
This is a full-time Accounting Technician position in the Research Finance and Business Administration (RFBA) shared services team within the Office of the Vice President for Research and Innovation. The position reports to the Accountant 2. The primary functions of this position are to process accounts payable, travel reimbursements, account reconciliations, and all aspects of financial record-keeping for both state indexes, royalties, and foundation funds. The position will also work on administrative functions to support the Innovation Partnership Services team for scheduling, email correspondence, database entries, and redirecting general inquiries to appropriate Innovation Managers.

This position must understand the relationships between, and the restrictions on, a variety of fund types and will work in close collaboration with other staff and the Sr. Director, Research Finance and Business Administration to ensure compliance on the faculty index accounts, royalty distributions, and awards. The successful candidate will operate in the University's accounting and fiscal transaction systems (Banner, Concur, Purchasing Portal, Duck Depot) as well as Excel and Outlook.

The position interacts with a wide range of customers, including undergraduate and graduate students, faculty, research and innovation services staff, other central UO offices, and outside vendors. The position requires attention to detail and accuracy and must possess strong communication and customer service skills.

Minimum Requirements
12 quarter hours (8 semester hours) of Accounting courses AND
An Associates Degree in Accounting; OR
One year of experience that includes entering, compiling and/or reporting financial information; OR
An equivalent combination of education and experience.

Professional Competencies
  • Knowledge of, or ability to learn, UO fiscal and UO Foundation policies, practices, and processes, and application of these in daily work transactions.
  • Knowledge of, or ability to learn, accounting and travel software programs.
  • Ability to trace, document, and resolve problems in an accounting system.
  • Ability to accurately maintain electronic and paper accounting systems and files for audit purposes.
  • Ability to translate financial rules and guidance to daily activities and ongoing processes.
  • Demonstrated accuracy and care in all work products.
  • Ability to manage a variety of tasks with multiple deadlines.
  • Ability to work independently without close supervision, as well as functioning as a member of a fiscal services team.

    Preferred Qualifications
    - Experience with Banner, Cognos, Concur, Excel, Outlook, Smartsheet, or comparable business applications.
    - Recent accounting experience in a higher education setting OR increasingly responsible accounting experience in a general office setting.
    - Working knowledge of standard accounting practices.
    - Recent training in Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion.
