Job Summary

The Drexel University Center for Nonviolence and Social Justice at the Drexel University Dornsife School of Public Health (Center) seeks at Training Specialist to support innovative trauma informed workforce development programming for Philadelphia youth impacted by violence.

The Center works to promote health, nonviolence and social justice through trauma informed practice, research, professional development, and advocacy for policy change. The flagship programs of the Center are Healing Hurt People, an innovative hospital and community-based violence intervention program and the Community Health Worker/Certified Peer Specialist (CHWP) Training Academy, a nine-week, 165-hour, trauma informed, mutual learning environment for young men and women with lived experience of violence to gain credentials as CHWs and CPSs and become healers and helpers in their own communities. The Academy helps young people grow into trauma informed, human services professionals who share life experience with their clients, break down stigma, and walk alongside people to help them access services.

The Training Specialist will be primarily responsible for the development and delivery of the CHWP Training Academy content in conjunction with the Training Supervisor and other Center staff. Additionally, the individual in this role will support implementation of Communities of Young People Healing, Experiencing & Rebuilding (CYPHER) healing circles, which engage youth and young adults in healing from trauma. The Training Specialist is further responsible to assist the Training Supervisor in implementation of community outreach and engagement activities to support the overall goals of the Center. The successful candidate will be sensitive to issues of race, violence and trauma, an energetic leader and self-starter, capable of teamwork, possess a diverse skillset and able to effectively multi-task and problem solve.

Essential Functions

1. Training & Facilitation
a. Support the identification, interviewing, and on-boarding of young adults impacted by violence into the CHWP Training Academy
b. Deliver scripted training modules and contribute to training facilitation
c. Work with Training Supervisor and Project Manager to ensure training and grant requirements are met
d. Manage participant files and program database; enter and update data as needed. Provide support for program evaluation

2. Community Engagement
a. Recruit and network with community partners to identify potential participants for CHWP Training Academy
b. Cultivate long-term relationships that support CHWP Training Academy graduates and other Center initiatives
c. Co-develop and implement community outreach plan to raise awareness of CYPHER initiative
d. Identify and build relationships with community organization to facilitate CYPHER groups; in conjunction to creating a direct referral source for HHP
e. Track metrics for improvement of community outreach and engagement activities

3. Individual Coaching and Support
a. Assess training participants’ needs, strengths, and barriers
b. Provide on-going training relating to job seeking, and the skills of maintaining employment once hired.
c. Assist participants in all stages of job search, including resume and cover letter development, job application and interview preparation
d. Provide information about job listings, job fairs; networks with and refers participants to employers and training providers
e. Monitor participants’ progress; contacts participants to review their plans and progress; update individual files and program database as required
f. Assists participants in navigating and accessing other community and government agency services to address varied needs that may interfere with employment and training.

4. Other duties as assigned by supervisor.

Required Qualifications

One of the following combinations of education and experience:
  • A Bachelor’s degree in social work, education, or a related field, with at least two years’ experience in human services, workforce development or classroom teaching/training - OR
  • An Associates degree with at least four years’ experience in human services, workforce development or classroom teaching/training - OR
  • A GED/high school diploma with at least five years’ experience in human services, workforce development or classroom teaching/training
  1. Teaching/training Sensitivity to issues of race, violence, and trauma
  2. Ability to navigate diverse neighborhoods, systems, and organizations
  3. Strong communication, interpersonal, and coordination skills
  4. Enthusiastic, nurturing, and adaptable approach to teaching
  5. Excellent presentation, communication, and interpersonal skills
  6. Ability to work independently and as a member of a team
  7. Ability to multi-task and be flexible to changes
  8. Strong organizational, planning and classroom management skills
  9. Proficiency in Microsoft Office and basic computer skills such as internet searching and completing online forms


Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with trauma informed care, positive youth development, and/or harm reduction frameworks
• Experience working with individuals who have experienced significant barriers to employment, including history of violence, trauma, homelessness, incarceration, substance use and mental health challenges
• Classroom teaching experience
• Experience working with adult learners and/or opportunity youth
• Experience planning/facilitating lessons
• Prior experience in developing training materials, conducting training programs/activities, and/or project management is preferred
