Southern Illinois University Edwardsville invites nominations and applications for the Dean of the School of Dental Medicine (SDM). The dental school is located on its own 20-acre campus in the historic river town of Alton, Illinois—30 minutes from St. Louis, Missouri, 20 minutes from the SIU campus in Edwardsville, and 35 minutes from the East St. Louis campus, with patient clinics on all three campuses. The school offers a four-year doctoral curriculum leading to a D.M.D. degree and has a reputation for graduating excellent clinicians ready to practice immediately through hands-on training in small class settings. An International Advanced Placement Program (IAPP) was established in 2016. Post graduate training programs include Endodontics, Advanced Education in General Dentistry (AEGD) and Implant Fellowship program at the Alton campus. with the development and implementation of a new program in Orthodontics currently underway. SDM is also affiliated with two local hospitals, Alton Memorial in Alton, IL and Touchette Regional Hospital in Centreville, IL. Total enrollment in all programs is approximately 225 students and residents. SDM’s bio-medical faculty includes behavioral science, anatomy and physiology, and immunology/microbiology specialists, clinicians, and researchers focusing on dental health and education. SDM also has a bio-medical library, supported by the Lovejoy Library within SIUE. SDM recently completed CODA accreditation in 2019 with the highest honors and no recommendations. SDM has completed a new post-graduate clinic that includes operating rooms for general anesthesia/sedation procedures which opened in late Summer, 2021 and planning for a new auditorium is underway. SDM has a faculty practice clinic at the Edwardsville campus. SDM is dedicated to community outreach for underserved communities including children and veterans.
The Dean is the chief academic, administrative, and fiscal officer of the School of Dental Medicine and reports to the Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs. Candidates must have a D.D.S./D.M.D. degree from an A.D.A. accredited institution, an Illinois dental license or eligibility for Illinois licensure, and significant administrative, organizational and governance experience. The duties of the Dean include:
- Facilitating and providing management of strategic planning and budget initiatives related to teaching, research, and service;
- Working with the faculty to administer the policies of the School;
- Leading fundraising and development initiatives in cooperation with the SIUE Foundation;
- Facilitating open and effective communication;
- Acting as a liaison between SIUE, SDM and professional organizations;
- Facilitating School’s planning process, budget, faculty and personnel management;
- Overseeing administration of facilities and equipment, overseeing and promotion of academic programs;
- Managing of student and patient issues, and public relations.
Understanding of a public university setting is required, as is knowledge and experience with accrediting bodies, fundraising, overseeing clinic operations, student centeredness, equity-minded leadership, and supporting faculty scholarly activities. The SDM Dean is an active and collaborative member of the SIUE Deans’ Council working to promote the academic excellence of the University. Preferred characteristics of the Dean include entrepreneurship, advanced clinical skills, and previous experience with managing large operational budgets.
The SIU School of Dental Medicine is the only Illinois dental school outside the Chicago metropolitan area but within 20 miles of St. Louis. Minimum Qualifications
A D.M.D. or D.D.S.
degree from an ADA accredited dental school. Applicants must
be licensed to practice dentistry in the state of Illinois or be
able to meet the requirements for permanent licensure in Illinois
and have significant administrative, organizational, and governance
experience. The successful candidate must be eligible for
tenure and have a record commensurate with rank of associate
professor or professor.

Terms of Appointment
Terms of appointment include a
continuing 12-month contract, subject to University
policies.
