The Department of Biology in the College of Arts and Sciences at American University invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor beginning August 2022. Rank will be dependent on experience and stature in the field. Depending on qualifications, the appointee to this position may be recommended for tenure at the time of hiring.

The ideal candidate for this position is a collaborative Ph.D. scientist with an established research program in any aspect of microbiology, including prokaryotic evolution, antibiotic resistance, multi-drug resistance mechanisms, pathogenesis, environmental microbiology, microbiomes, biofilms, and/or host response. This individual will complement departmental strengths in molecular biology, cell biology, neuroscience, evolution, physiology, genetics, and genomics. We especially encourage scientists capable of establishing synergies with other departments in the College of Arts and Sciences to apply. This would include those who focus on how microorganisms affect biochemical pathways, antibiotic resistance, community structure, biodiversity, population health and economies, and diseases affecting mental function (e.g., AIDS-related dementia). Applicants must have demonstrated effective teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Candidates with experience working with, teaching to or mentoring a diverse student body, and those able to contribute to and foster diversity and inclusion efforts on campus and with respect to the biology curriculum are preferred. Candidates from demographic backgrounds traditionally underrepresented among science faculty are particularly encouraged to apply. Responsibilities of the successful candidate will consist of: maintaining a vigorous and internationally visible research program, mentoring undergraduate and graduate student research projects, teaching undergraduate and graduate courses, recruiting graduate students, and participating in department, college, and university service activities. The successful candidate will occupy lab space in the university’s new Hall of Science, a state-of-the-art facility that houses the biology, environmental sciences, chemistry, and neuroscience departments.

Salary is competitive and commensurate with experience. Review of applications will begin immediately and will continue until the position is filled. Full consideration will be given to applications received by October 15, 2021. Please submit applications via: INTERFOLIO LINK. Applications should include a cover letter, curriculum vitae, research statement (including accomplishments and future directions), teaching statement describing how prior experience and future goals will advance the department's commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion, and a list of three professional references. Please contact Dr. Victoria Connaughton at vconn@american.edu if you have any questions.
