The Department of Biology (http://unf.edu/coas/biology/) at the University of North Florida seeks to fill a tenure-track position at the Assistant Professor level to begin August 8, 2022. We are searching for an outstanding scientist who studies plant ecology with a preference for candidates working in coastal and estuarine systems. UNF is a Carnegie Community Engaged Institution located in Jacksonville, Florida and is home to six colleges and over 17,000 students. The UNF Department of Biology offers baccalaureate degrees in Biology and Biomedical Sciences with areas of concentration in, Coastal and Marine Biology, Ecology and Evolution and Molecular/Cell Biology. Masters level degrees are also offered with a focus on Coastal/Marine Biology, Ecology/Evolutionary Biology or Microbiology/Molecular Biology. Furthermore, because many Biology faculty conduct research focused on coastal and marine ecosystems and wildlife, the department has a nationally recognized program in Coastal and Marine Biology.  Responsibilities include undergraduate and graduate teaching (General Biology 2, Plant Anatomy and Physiology and upper-level courses in area of expertise), maintaining an active, externally funded research program and contributing to the department’s service mission. The minimum qualifications are a Ph.D. in Biology or related discipline with evidence of a significant research program. Evidence of teaching experience is preferred.  Candidates that can contribute to the establishment of new research initiatives at the William C. Webb Coastal Research Station, a 1,050-acre tract of saltmarsh wetlands situated on the eastern bank of the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway less than 7 miles from the University, are particularly encouraged to apply. Other features and potential research opportunities include the Sawmill Slough Preserve, a 383-acre plot of protected wetland comprising of swamps, forests and ponds located on UNF campus, a 20’ x 80’ greenhouse situated on the roof of the Biology Building, and strong research ties with other agencies involved in coastal wetlands research, including the Guana-Tolomato-Matanzas National Estuarine Research Reserve and National Park Service.

Required qualifications: 

  • Ph.D. in Biology or related discipline with evidence with a significant research program
  • Commitment to excellence in teaching undergraduate and graduate-level courses within the biology department curriculum. 
  • Strong commitment to mentoring and supervising undergraduate and graduate research students.
  • Excellence in research demonstrated by a strong publication record in peer-reviewed journals
  • Demonstrated potential to establish an independent research program.
