The Romance Languages Department of Washington and Lee University (W&L) invites applications for a tenure-track position in French at the Assistant Professor level beginning July 1, 2022. We seek candidates with specialization in nineteenth- and twentieth-century French literature and culture who also have preparation or experience in teaching French language and culture for Business. The successful candidate will join the W&L French program as it explores new curricular directions that link French with secondary areas of study and internships abroad. As a part of this effort, the successful candidate will have the opportunity to develop and teach a four-week Spring Term course either on campus or in a Francophone country of their choice. The new member will actively participate in the French program's vibrant community outside the classroom, helping plan language and culture events with our World Language Teaching Assistant and the Francophone Student Organization.

W&L is ranked in the top twelve liberal arts institutions and Romance Languages is one of the largest departments in the College. Candidates must also demonstrate a commitment to scholarly research and publishing. The teaching load is 5 courses per year plus one four-week Spring Term course every other year. The teaching assignment will include language courses, introductory courses on literature and culture, and an occasional upper-level course on a topic of interest.

The university requires employees to become fully vaccinated for COVID-19 and new employees must provide proof of at least their first shot prior to the first day of employment. Individuals may seek a medical or a religious exemption to the vaccination requirement.

Only candidates with native or near-native fluency in French will be considered, and the successful candidate will have a PhD at the time of hiring. ABD candidates who can articulate a plan for immediate completion will be considered.
