Summary of Job Duties:The Skilled Tradesman-STW-HVAC is responsible for performing skilled mechanical maintenance duties in the inspection, repair, installation and alteration of heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration systems and related equipment and facilities; perform preventive maintenance and routine servicing of equipment. The Skilled Tradesman is responsible for the work activities in one or more of the following skilled trades: HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning) area. This position is governed by state and federal laws and agency/institution policy.

Qualifications:

Required Education &/or Experience:

  • Formal education or training equivalent to a high school diploma;

  • Completion of required education or training along with the required license or certification in HVAC Mechanics according to ACA 17-33-301;

    Level 1: requires EPA Section 608 Universal Refrigerant Technician Certification

    Level 2: Requires completion of an apprenticeship or academic program approved be the State of AR or an equivalent apprenticeship or academic program from another US state . Three (3) or more years of work experience may be allowed as a substitute.

    Level 3: Requires AR Class B, C, D, E, or L HVAC license, or equivalent license in good standing from another US state, or completion of an apprenticeship program approved by the state of AR or an equivalent apprenticeship/academic program. Five (5) or more years of work experience may be allowed as a substitute.

    Level 4: Requires AR Class A HVAC license or equivalent license in good standing from another US state. Seven (7) or more years of experience may be allowed as a substitute for license.

  • Must Possess a valid driver's license.



Job Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Install, maintain, repair and overhaul air conditioning systems, commercial and industrial refrigeration and air conditioning systems and combined heating, ventilation and cooling systems;

  • Inspect, repair, modify and install HVAC equipment including refrigeration and air conditioning compressors, receivers, condensers, chillers, water cooling towers, forced air converter units, pumps, automatic and hand valves, expansion valves and capillary tubes; connect motors to control panels; Install and calibrate systems; Install copper tubing and repair pipes and tubing as necessary; Test joints and insulate pipes of refrigeration and air conditioning systems; Install, rebuild, replace or repair fans, motors, thermostats, fuses, filters, bearings, valves, controls, gaskets and other equipment as necessary;

  • Conduct regular preventive maintenance inspections of refrigeration units, isolated heating and ventilating units, including boilers, gas and electrically operated air conditioning equipment, and make necessary adjustments or repairs; service and repair evaporative coolers; conduct boiler water quality test and treatment; Test and examine boiler operations, observing meter and pressure gauges; Adjust boiler burner combustion; Flush boilers, descale tubing; rebuild pressure and temperature safety valves and water pumps;

  • Repair or replace defective parts in units and equipment and their controls, including thermostats, automatic switches, fan controls, log switches, damper motors, louvers, relays, filters, controls, belts, compressors, heat exchangers, high limit controls, pressure controls, safety valves, and automatic gas valves; perform skilled electrical maintenance work in the repair, installation and alteration of HVAC equipment, components, timers, motors and wiring systems as needed; Lubricate and pack heating, ventilation, refrigeration, and air-conditioning motors, pumps, fans, and other equipment;

  • Operate a variety of hand and power tools, welder torch, vacuum pump, test equipment utilized in the trade and a motor vehicle; maintain equipment in effective and safe working condition; Maintain parts and tool inventory;

  • Maintain related records concerning time, labor and materials; maintain log of tasks performed and write reports as required;

  • Assist other skilled tradesmen to complete projects that require multiple departments to work together;

  • Must be able to follow verbal and written instructions;

  • Perform other duties as assigned.



Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Must be able to wear a respirator;

  • Must be able to negotiate distances (from building to building on campus) and the ability to go up and down stairs in multi-story buildings;

  • Must be able to navigate in small spaces including manholes and tunnels to perform maintenance and/or make necessary repairs;

  • Must be able to hold, start, use and operate tools and equipment used in the skilled trade for extended periods;

  • Must be able to load/unload tools and equipment (weights varying up to 75 lbs.);

  • Must be able to communicate to campus community and co-workers;

  • Knowledge of the methods, practices, and safety precautions in one or more of the skilled trades;

  • Knowledge of the accepted practices, processes, materials, and tools of the various skilled trades;

  • Knowledge of the laws and regulations relating to one or more of the skilled trades;

  • Ability to provide mathematical and analytical skills necessary to do material estimates for one or more of the skilled trades;

  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, manuals, schematics, building plans, and/or work drawings;

  • Ability to understand verbal and written instructions;

  • Ability to maintain inventory on needed parts and tools for one or more of the skilled trades.
