Director VETs Office, VP of Enrollment Management

The VP of Enrollment Management invites applications for a VETs Office Director to join their team on-campus. Reporting to the Associate Vice President for Enrollment, the individual occupying this position is the point of contact assigned to network and collaborate with external stakeholders, including legislators and other elected officials, military installation commanders, and veteran association leadership. The person in this position must develop, implement, and continually assess collaborative partnerships that support and expand the military student population at UM. The person assigned to this position will network and collaborate with stakeholders across campus to build effective relationships and communicate strategies for supporting military-affiliated students and create a more veteran and military friendly campus. The individual occupying this role must act as an expert resource for UM leadership on issues related to military.

The person assigned to this role will manage all aspects of VA and TA certification to ensure university compliance and accuracy with all VA rules and regulations. The individual assigned to this position serves as the point of contact for Veterans Affairs, Department of Defense and State of Montana for VA certification. This position works to ensure UM maintains funding eligibility by interpreting and implementing complex and changing regulations. The person in this role will also work to ensure required VA and TA communication, reporting and responses to inquiries and complaints are accurate and on time. This position must work to identify and resolve UM barriers that impact students receiving VA benefits with a continued emphasis on process improvement.

Duties include, but not limited to:

  • Create and implement a long-range, strategic plan to build a data-driven, sustainable department aimed at providing superior support to military-affiliated University of Montana (UM) students
  • Establish goals, monitor progress and hold staff accountable for fulfilling their assigned duties and responsibilities
  • Gather, provide and adjust strategy based on outcomes of data
  • Provide strategic guidance and direction for the department by aligning resources with strategic priorities while leading continuous analysis of needs, effectiveness and efficiencies
  • Maximize use of technology in all operational and strategic aspects of student support
  • Conduct assessments (and implement appropriate improvement plans based on said assessments)
  • Increase enrollment of military-affiliated UM students
  • Develop and implement an enrollment management plan focused on military affiliated students at UM in consultation with associate Vice President of Enrollment Management and the UM President
  • Analyze enrollment data to determine effectiveness of tactics and make data-informed decisions
  • Closely collaborate with appropriate personnel within Admissions, Student Success and Marketing departments
  • Prepare and manage all aspects of VETS budget
  • Serve as the lead point of contact for all our military personnel
  • Participate in or lead university-wide planning as expert on military service issues

Position Details
  • Position is full-time, 1.0 FTE, Letter of Appointment and includes a comprehensive and competitive benefits package including Insurance package, mandatory retirement plan, partial tuition waiver, and wellness program.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills, written and oral communication
  • In depth knowledge of the US military and the educational opportunities afforded to the military. Demonstrated leadership, decision making, writing and editing skills
  • Strong sense of initiative and well-developed leadership/team building skills
  • Proven record of project management
  • Experience ensuring compliance with complex rules, regulations, policies, procedures. etc.
  • Ability to coordinate and execute large and small events
  • Demonstrated ability to multi-task and lead a project to completion
  • Must be able to maintain confidentiality
  • Strong cross-cultural interpersonal skills
  • The ability to present the University of Montana in a positive way to diverse populations
  • Experience with long-range strategic planning
  • Proactively address issues and recommend solutions
  • Prefer knowledge of the unique needs of a student-centered environment
  • Must have the ability to adapt to changes in the work environment, ability to manage competing demands and handle unexpected events while maintaining a professional demeanor


Minimum Required Experience
  • Bachelor's degree in related field and minimum five years of professional, management experience in higher education or military


Preferred Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in related field
  • Experience working in higher education in Financial Aid, Advising or Admissions
  • Veteran status


About the VETS Office and UM

The Veterans Education and Transition Services (VETS) Office was created by the University of Montana to serve our veterans and their family members. We serve as the primary liaison for Veterans Affairs (VA) Education Benefits between the University of Montana, the VA, Federal Tuition Assistance, and the student. The office serves as the main location to meet other Veterans, receive assistance with services, and to hear about events that may be of interest. Our goal is to increase the retention and graduation rates for our student population and to assist in the recruitment of new students using VA benefits.
