Tenure-Track Assistant Professor of Reading Intervention and SPED

Summary:

The School of Education at the University of Portland is seeking candidates for a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Reading Intervention and SPED beginning in August 2022.

The position includes teaching courses in the School of Education’s reading intervention endorsement program, literacy courses in the undergraduate and graduate (MAT) teacher candidate programs, general core education courses in elementary education, development and integration of dyslexia intervention programming  (IDA standards integration, courses, and in-service professional development), graduate, and doctoral (EdD) programs.

Responsibilities:

The faculty member will teach, mentor, and advise students in undergraduate and graduate elementary education, endorsement, and special education courses, engage in doctoral dissertation advisement, conduct a program of applied scholarship and research, and collaborate with colleagues on program and school-wide projects. Preference will be given to candidates who have classroom experience with diverse student populations and expertise in structured literacy and dyslexia education. Candidates should show a readiness to participate in school/university partnerships and in new initiatives for the purposes of research and teacher preparation and development.

Requirements:

Education & Experience

Required: An earned doctorate from a regionally accredited institution

Required: At least 3 years successful P-12 teaching experience at the elementary or middle school level

Required: Graduate studies with a concentration in reading interventions for general education and special student populations (dyslexia, early intervention, recovery)

Required: Knowledge of/experience working with pre-service and in-service teachers

Required: Potential or requisite scholarly record focused on the science of reading and P-12 student learning  to warrant appointment at the tenure-track assistant professor rank.

Experience working in the areas of dyslexia education, structured reading, and P-12 state-mandated dyslexia screening and education is highly desirable. For an overview of the Oregon dyslexia legislation context see here.
