The Advanced Academic Programs (AAP) is a division of the Krieger School of Arts and Sciences at the Johns Hopkins University (JHU). Position Description:

The Center for Biotechnology Education housed within the Advanced Academic Programs (AAP) seeks a Faculty Program Coordinator to teach in the Biotechnology program and manage the Center’s laboratory. Of particular interest are candidates who have experience with cell culture and molecular biology techniques, and laboratory management, as well as teaching and engaging students from diverse backgrounds. The Faculty Program Coordinator is a full-time, non-tenure-track, 12-month renewable faculty position with the academic title of Lecturer or Senior Lecturer. The Faculty Program Coordinator will have significant interaction/collaboration with all members (Center Director, Program Directors, Assistant/Associate Directors, Program Coordinators and instructors) of the Center and will report to the Center Director, and to the Associate Dean for AAP. Candidates must be able to be on location at the Homewood campus several days a week as the position requires being physically present in the Center’s teaching laboratory. This position is expected to begin January 2022. The Program Coordinator will have the following faculty and administrative responsibilities:

Faculty Responsibilities:
  • Teaching 3 graduate courses (at least one laboratory course) per year, including the preparation for and time spent in the classroom (online or onsite), using best practices for online teaching, engaging and mentoring students from diverse backgrounds in the learning process, responding to student questions
  • Advising students in Biotechnology programs, including thesis, capstone, or independent research advising [where appropriate]
  • Providing input on the curriculum and new course development, especially laboratory courses and/or workshops, to ensure the delivery of quality programs
  • Other academic duties normally performed by full-time or regular part-time faculty, such as participating on committees or in other academic service.
Administrative Responsibilities:
  • Manage the Center’s teaching laboratory, by but not limited to the following:
    • Maintaining laboratory supplies and records of purchases
    • Preparing media, materials, and cultures in support of laboratory classes
    • Maintaining bacterial and mammalian cell culture stocks
    • Coordinating with laboratory class faculty
    • Ensuring all equipment in is good working order
    • Communicating with sales representatives and Hopkins staff (Core/supply store)
  • Other administrative duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Master’s degree in a life science field with related graduate research experience
  • One to three years of teaching experience online and/or at the graduate level
  • One to three years of professional work experience outside of academia within biotechnology or biological sciences, including but not limited to consulting or collaborative work or research with organizations like FDA, NCI, NIH, HHS, Biotechnology Companies, Pharmaceutical Companies, or Professional Associations
  • The ability to teach a wide variety of courses in the biotechnology field
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Terminal degree in a life science field with related graduate research experience in biochemistry, molecular biology, and/or cell culture methods
  • Four or more years of teaching experience online and/or at the graduate level
  • Four or more years of professional work experience outside of academia within biotechnology or biological sciences, including but not limited to consulting or collaborative work or research with organizations like FDA, NCI, NIH, HHS, Biotechnology Companies, Pharmaceutical Companies, or Professional Associations
  • Ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment with competing demands and multiple deadlines
  • Experience managing a laboratory
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination of employment.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
