Position Summary:

This position serves as a Payroll Specialist for the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences (CALS). CALS Payroll Specialists serve as a point of contact for providing routine human resources information to one or more work units in order to ensure timely and accurate payroll transaction processing. Responsibilities include auditing biweekly work unit payrolls, while also monitoring and/or completing payroll transactions and employee payroll changes. CALS Payroll Specialists maintain personnel records and assist with work unit operational policy development. CALS currently employs approximately 3000 students, faculty and staff.

CALS Payroll Specialists work under the general supervision of the CALS Payroll Manager, as a vital member of the CALS Human Resources (HR) team. The CALS HR team offices are located on the UW-Madison campus. CALS educational and research programs cover fields ranging from physical and life sciences to social science. CALS' mission is to advance and share knowledge, discover solutions and promote opportunities in food and agriculture, bioenergy, health, the environment and human well-being.

Minimum Years and Type of Relevant Work Experience:

An ideal candidate has the following experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities:

-Ability to use web-based Human Resources Information Systems (e.g. HRIS, PeopleSoft, Workday) for payroll and benefit administrative functions.
-Experience and proficiency in using Microsoft Office 365 applications (e.g. Outlook, Word, Excel, OneNote).
-Knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer service.
-Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing as appropriate for the needs of the audience.
-Ability to use logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to problems.
-Ability to adapt to, and learn how to use new and changing technology.

Additional Qualifications:

-Recent experience applying and interpreting University of Wisconsin (or a similarly sized and/or type of organization) payroll and benefits policies and procedures preferred but not required.
-Familiarity with the Fair Labor Standards Act overtime rules, additional pay components for University staff, Wisconsin Retirement System, and benefits programs desired.

Work Schedule:

This is a full-time position with 40 hours of scheduled work per week. Our standard business hours are 7:45am to 4:30pm, Monday through Friday. Some scheduling flexibility is available. This position requires some work to be performed in-person, onsite, at a designated campus work location. Some work may be performed remotely, at an offsite, non-campus work location.
